The 49-year-old legend, who announced on Tuesday that this would be her final Wimbledon, was seeking to win a record 21st title on the hallowed turf.

But the American and partner Liezel Huber lost in the women's doubles quarter-finals to Chinese fourth seeds Zi Yan and Jie Zheng 4-6 6-4 6-0.

And she then lost in the mixed doubles with Mark Knowles in straight sets.

They were beaten 7-5 6-1 by Israel's Andy Ram and Russia's Vera Zvonareva in the third round.

Knowles could be forgiven for being a little tired after his history-making six-hour epic doubles match on Wednesday with Daniel Nestor.

Navratilova, who turns 50 in October, came out looking fired-up after her defeat in the women's doubles but could not produce the win her fans wanted.

The nine-times singles champion equalled the Wimbledon titles record set by Billy Jean King when she teamed up with Leander Paes to win the mixed doubles three years ago.

Her Wimbledon haul comprises nine singles, seven doubles and four mixed doubles titles.

In a professional career spanning more than 30 years she claimed 18 Grand Slam tournament wins, a record 167 singles titles and 174 doubles titles.

Pam Shriver was Navratilova's doubles partner, with the pair winning a record 109 doubles titles together, including 20 Grand Slam titles.

And Shriver paid tribute to Navratilova's achievements in tennis.

"Martina leaves an extraordinary legacy to the game - 167 singles titles, 174 doubles titles, 20 titles at Wimbledon including nine singles - her numbers will go down in history as the greatest ever," Shriver told BBC Sport.
