GAME-BY-GAME UPDATES

Third set:

Massu 1-6 4-6 4-6 Murray
A bad return from Massu sets up two match points for Murray. Massu plays the first of them very well but - despite the unwanted advice from some overexcited spectators - Murray holds his nerve to seal an impressive win.

The Centre Court crowd give him a rapturous cheer, and Murray looks more than a little pumped up himself.

Massu 1-6 4-6 4-5 Murray
With his back against the wall, Massu starts to play some of his best tennis of the match, winning it to 15 as Murray is forced to wait a little longer... he hopes.

Massu 1-6 4-6 3-5 Murray
Massu goes 30-0 up with some more carefree swings of the racquet and the Chilean has the temerity to go and win the game 40-30 to get a break back.

Massu 1-6 4-6 2-5 Murray
Massu is swinging at everything that comes his way and he does at least get another game under his belt. But it may well be Massu's last.

Massu 1-6 4-6 1-5 Murray
Murray produces a moment of magic with the most delicate of lobs, while Massu is forced to leap over the net as he chases down yet another drop shot. It's all in vain though, as Murray inches ever closer to a richly deserved win,

Massu 1-6 4-6 1-4 Murray
Murray senses victory when he gets two break point at advantage but Massu, who earlier in the game contested a call, saves both.

There is concern in the players' families box after Murray slips over on the baseline but the worst thing that happens is Massu wins the point. Murray quickly recovers to win it back and then seals the break.

Massu 1-6 4-6 1-3 Murray
Massu suddenly looks a bit downhearted and Murray races through the fourth game - taking it to 15.

"This is very solid from Murray. We shouldn't get too down on Massu as this is his least favourite surface. But Murray has made him feel very uncomfortable out there and has played an excellent match."
John McEnroe, BBC summariser

Massu 1-6 4-6 1-2 Murray
The breakthrough comes for Murray as he converts the second of two break points to take the advantage in the third set.

Massu 1-6 4-6 1-1 Murray
Hope for Massu as he earns his first break point of the match but Murray quickly nullifies it with an ace. He earns another break point as a Murray shot goes long but once again the Scot saves it - this time with a brilliant low shot over the net.

This game is turning into a real battle and Murray has to save another break point before finally holding his serve to level the set.

Massu 1-6 4-6 1-0 Murray
Massu smiles as a return tumbles into the net and a point later Murray bounces his racket into the lush green turf as he does the same. But the Chilean 31st seed has the last laugh as he holds his serve go 1-0 up.

Second set:

Massu 1-6 4-6 Murray
Football legend Jimmy Hill looks on from the stands as Murray wraps up the set - helped by a brilliant diving winner to go 40-15 up on the way.

Massu 1-6 4-5 Murray
Perhaps motivated by desperation, Massu decides to serve and volley for the first time in the match. Murray, momentarily surprised, regains his composure to send a lovely lob and then a superb passing shot past Massu, setting up a break point.

Massu saves two of the break points, and then holds but it may be merely delaying the inevitable.

Murray queries one line call but it is tame stuff by the standards of some of his recent outbursts at officials. Such is his dominance in the match that it's scarcely worth getting upset about.

Massu 1-6 3-5 Murray
Murray is firmly in control of this match and is going about his side things with the minimum of fuss. Another comfortable hold of serve puts the pressure back on Massu.

Massu 1-6 3-4 Murray
Massu seems to be losing it in the head, muttering sinisterly to himself after mishit shots and firing a double fault to gift Murray a break point. His "ai-yai-ai" after a bad serve draws sympathetic giggles from the Centre Court crowd and he somehow drags himself back into the game by holding.

Massu 1-6 2-4 Murray
The drop shot is still working for Murray, and he certainly sees no reason to stop using it. Massu's frustrations are taken out on the ball in one ferocious return but Murray holds again to keep his opponent at arm's length.

Massu 1-6 2-3 Murray
Massu holds to keep himself in the set. The Chilean's play is oscillating between infuriatingly lazy and impressively clinical. If he can find some consistency, this match could yet become more of a contest.

Massu 1-6 1-3 Murray
The unforced errors for Massu are mounting (11 to Murray's five) and Murray is taking full advantage. The Scot goes further ahead and is looking composed.

Massu 1-6 1-2 Murray
Massu's brief resurgence hits the buffers as Murray earns another break of serve. He looks as surprised as many of the fans as Massu double faults by going for an ace on his second serve when 40-15 down.

"Murray just needs to keep his concentration. He's playing well and keeping Massu off balance - he's doing what he need to do right now."
John McEnroe, BBC summariser

Massu 1-6 1-1 Murray
Massu's returns of serve are a little wild, but he is gradually finding his touch around the court from the baseline. The match is certainly more finely balanced now, as Murray has to dig a bit deeper to get back on level terms in the set.

Massu 1-6 1-0 Murray
To say Massu is not a natural at the net would be the polite way of putting it. At 40-15 up, the Chilean misses a sitter of a volley to allow Murray back to deuce but finally takes a game which was far harder than it should have been.

Play is briefly disrupted when a ball bounces into proceedings from another court. Safe to say that it was out then.

First set:

Massu 1-6 Murray
Murray takes an incredibly straightforward opener on his first set point. Massu, nominally the 31st seed, is nowhere near his best and will have to find some sort of form in a hurry if he is to avoid a heavy defeat.

Massu 1-5 Murray
Murray puts an easy shot straight into the net on the first point of the game, and does not really get back into it as Massu finally gets on the scoreboard by holding to love.

"Massu's head is still in the locker-room - mentally, he hasn't got out onto Centre Court yet. He's got to regroup and get into this match."
John McEnroe, BBC summariser

Massu 0-5 Murray
There is a slight drop in intensity from Murray, but some odd shot selection from his opponent gifts him the game and puts him within sight of a dream first set at this year's Wimbledon.

Massu 0-4 Murray
The television cameras tear themselves away from Murray in the break between games to focus on his girlfriend. But attention soon switches back to Murray, and the 19-year-old does not disappoint.

Massu is slipping and sliding all over the court and his choice of footwear may be costing him dear as an easy volley is plopped into the net after he has to play it on his knees. The Chilean clay court specialist looks ill at ease on the green, green grass of SW19.

Massu 0-3 Murray
Murray is playing the drop-shot with remarkable delicacy, although the Scot will have to be careful he does not become over-reliant on it. He fights back from 30-0 down to take his third straight game.

Massu 0-2 Murray
Murray could not have asked for a better start as he breaks to love with a quite brilliant game. His shots from the baseline are leaving Massu standing even at this early stage.

Massu 0-1 Murray
Murray starts in confident fashion with the full support of the crowd behind him. He takes the first game of the match, sealing it with a glorious drop-shot that Massu gets nowhere near.

1740 BST: The players are warming up, with Murray - who seems to be wearing some extensive strapping on his ankle - looking composed in front of a packed Centre Court crowd.

There are fans in the crowd trying to mark the rising force in British tennis with T-shirts bearing the logo "The Tiger roars no more... Long live Murray."

Poor old Tim.
