Vaidisova is through to her maiden Grand Slam quarter-final |
Amelie Mauresmo's hopes of winning her home Grand Slam are over for another year after Nicole Vaidisova overpowered the top seed in the fourth round. Mauresmo again seemed to crumble under the weight of expectation in Paris but her 17-year-old opponent deserves credit for her high-quality play.
Mauresmo won a tight first set but lost her way as the 16th seed hit back in style to triumph 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 6-2.
She goes on to play Venus Williams in her first Grand Slam quarter-final.
"I am very excited to have reached the next round," said the 17-year-old.
"I have never reached the quarter-finals of a grand slam and I had never
beaten a world number one either."
Mauresmo is left to ponder another early exit at her home Grand Slam, where she is yet to make it beyond the quarter-finals in 12 attempts.
"I had a little feeling of exhaustion in the second and third sets and she was serving much better than me while I was not able to hold my serve," said Mauresmo.
"It's disappointing but I think I still have to improve on clay. Maybe people shouldn't expect much of me on clay."
Mauresmo thrashed Vaidisova 6-1 6-1 in the fourth round of this year's Australian Open, which she went on to win.
