Federer and Nadal into last eight
Roger Federer
Federer will face David Ferrer in the quarter-finals
Top seed Roger Federer cruised past ATP debutant Benjamin Balleret of Monaco 6-3 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters.

Federer will now take on David Ferrer after the Spaniard beat his compatriot Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-1 6-7 (5-7) 6-3.

Defending champion Rafael Nadal of Spain went through with a 6-3 6-3 win over Belgian Kristof Vliegen.

Spaniard Tommy Robredo, seeded 15, dug deep to secure a 5-7 6-1 7-5 win over Argentine third seed David Nalbandian.

Nadal will face sixth seed Guillermo Coria after the Argentine saw off ninth seed Nicolas Kiefer of Germany 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 6-3, despite serving an ATP three-set match record of 23 double faults.

"Without a serve I can still win, so that makes me very confident," said Coria.

"Even if it's 15 or 20 double faults, it's the same. You just have to get your confidence back."

In other matches, fourth seed Ivan Ljubicic overcame Gilles Simon 6-3 6-2 and Argentine seventh seed Gaston Gaudio defeated Alessio Di Mauro of Italy 6-2 6-4.

Chile's Fernando Gonzalez, seeded 12, went through after Sweden's Robin Soderling retired injured with the score 6-2 3-2 to Gonzalez.
