Cyprus' Marcos Baghdatis had to give a strong second-set display to beat Jesse Witten 6-4 7-6 (7-2) in the US Men's Clay Court Championship first round. Baghdatis was 5-2 down in the second set before turning on the style to force the tie-break and clinch victory.
Top seed Andy Roddick saw off Austria's Oliver Maranch 6-3 6-4 in the second round to set up a quarter-final meeting with Germany's Tommy Haas in Houston.
Haas was 5-2 down in the second set but recovered to beat Alexander Waske.
"I'm looking forward to playing Tommy," said Roddick, the defending champion.
"He's been playing great. I feel like I'm playing well, I've turned the corner and this will be a great test.
"He's in form and on a surface he likes. I want to play well against an elite player."
