British number two Greg Rusedski has pulled out of the Mercedes-Benz Cup in Los Angeles because of injury.

The 32-year-old left-hander, who was seeded eighth, withdrew after citing neck and shoulder problems.

Rusedski has been in a rich vein of form, winning the Hall of Fame Championships and reaching the semi-finals of the RCA Championships.

He won eight matches in a row before losing to American Taylor Dent in the last four in Indianapolis.

Later on Monday, Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan upset sixth-seeded Mario Ancic 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 to progress to the second round.

Brazilian left-hander Ricardo Mello stopped French seventh seed Sebastien Grosjean 1-6 6-2 6-3.

American Paul Goldstein defeated France's Cyril Saulnier 6-4 6-4.

Kevin Kim, also of the US, rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the third set to beat Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark 7-6 (7-2) 6-7 (3-7) 6-4.

And Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela eventually overcame Marcos Baghdatis, of Cyprus, 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-4.
