British teenager Andy Murray won his first round match at the Challenger event in Aptos, California. The 18-year-old Scot, who was awarded a wildcard for the tournament, beat Canadian Frederic Niemeyer 6-2 6-4.
And his chances of making further progress were boosted when his expected second-round opponent, second seed Justin Gimelstob, was beaten.
So Murray will now face Australian Marc Kimmich, who got into the draw as a qualifying lucky loser.
The tournament is a Challenger event, a level below the ATP tour.
Murray, who reached the third round at Wimbledon on his debut, went out of last week's Newport grass-court event in the second round.
