Pierce and Bhupathi win the title in their first tournament together |
Mary Pierce and Mahesh Bhupathi captured the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon with a 6-4 6-2 victory over Paul Hanley and Tatiana Perebiynis. France's Pierce and Bhupathi of India were a scratch pairing but upset second seeds Wayne and Cara Black in a superb run to the final.
In the title match, they were far too strong for their unseeded opponents.
Pierce, a singles quarter-finalist, served out the victory, clinching it with a forehand down the middle.
"I always knew we had a chance," said Bhupathi.
"We've been playing some really high quality tennis so it would have taken a really great performance to beat us."
Bhupathi said a "mutual friend" had introduced the pair before the tournament after the Indian was left without a partner in the mixed doubles.
Pierce said: "I've wanted to play with him for a while. I haven't been playing a lot of mixed lately but I've been feeling healthier and fitter lately.
"I had a great time. Mahesh is a great player and a great guy. I couldn't ask for any more."
