Navratilova has won 20 Wimbledon titles in total |
Martina Navratilova's quest to become the most decorated Wimbledon player ended at this year's Championships with two doubles defeats on Saturday. The 48-year-old holds a joint-record 20 SW19 titles with Billie Jean King.
But Navratilova and Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld were beaten in the women's doubles semi-finals 6-4 6-4 by Svetlana Kuznetsova and Amelie Mauresmo.
She and Mike Bryan then exited the mixed with a 6-3 4-6 7-9 quarter-final loss to Ken Ulyett and Liezl Huber.
Nine-times singles champion Navratilova was seeded eight in the women's event with Groenefeld, but Mauresmo and Kuznetsova, a new combination and unseeded, needed just an hour and eight minutes to brush the veteran aside.
The defeat against Zimbabwe's Ulyett and South Africa's Hube was a much tighter affair and the encounter took two hours 14 minutes.
Meanwhile, Australian Todd Woodbridge, one of the most successful doubles players in tennis history, ended his professional career on a losing note on Saturday after bowing out in the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles.
Woodbridge and compatriot Samantha Stosur suffered a 6-2 7-6 defeat to Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman and his American partner Lisa Raymond.
Woodbridge and Bjorkman won four Wimbledon mens' doubles titles together in the past.
