Ljubicic may be keeping the captain's seat warm for Ivanisevic |
Ivan Ljubicic has been named captain of Davis Cup champions Croatia. The 26-year-old takes over for the first-round tie against Austria on 10 February, but is likely to then pass on the reigns to legend Goran Ivanisevic.
"Ivan Ljubicic is the player-captain of Croatia's Davis Cup team," said Radimir Cacic, president of the Croatian Tennis Federation on Monday.
But he added that talks were to be held on Saturday with Ivanisevic, who he was "certain" would agree to take control.
Previous skipper Nikola Pilic resigned last week and Ivanisevic had been set to replace him under a deal struck before December's final victory over Slovakia.
But the 34-year-old former Wimbledon champion then announced that he was putting his captaincy bid on hold.
Ivanisevic was briefly Croatia's Davis Cup captain in 2000 and retired from professional tennis four years later.
