Gaston Gaudio beat fellow Argentine Mariano Puerta 6-3 7-5 in the Masters Cup in Shanghai on Monday. Gaudio's formidable backhand and accurate serving led him to his sixth victory over his close friend in their last six meetings.
Puerta, a last-minute replacement for injured second seed Rafael Nadal, produced 25 unforced errors.
Puerta plays Chilean Fernando Gonzalez on Wednesday, while Gaudio faces Russian Nikolay Davydenko.
