Kim Clijsters has admitted she thought her career might be over as she struggled with a wrist injury for almost a year. The Belgian has returned spectacularly with successive titles in Indian Wells and Miami over the last two weeks.
But she told BBC Five Live: "The doctors would say to my face 'keep trying' but my dad would speak to them and they'd say 'this could be over'.
"That's tough to hear but you start rehab and hope things will get better."
The 21-year-old Belgian has lost just once since returning in February after missing most of 2004.
She first injured her wrist in March of 2004 and had surgery on 12 June but tore the tendon again in the autumn.
Victory over Maria Sharapova in in the Nasdaq-100 Open final on Saturday saw her join Steffi Graf as the only other woman to complete an Indian Wells-Miami double.
