Andy Murray followed up his win over Tim Henman by beating Tomas Berdych 6-4 2-6 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the Swiss Indoors in Basel. After Murray won the first set with his only break point of the set, the Czech took control to take the second set.
But Murray broke in the seventh game of the deciding set to lead 4-3.
The 18-year-old held his nerve to wrap up the victory three games later and set up a meeting with fourth seed Fernando Gonzalez from Chile.
Berdych had six break points in the first set but was unable to convert any but he made amends in the second, claiming his first break point of the second set to lead 3-1.
The Briton won just one more game in the set as Berdych levelled matters.
After Murray broke in the decider, he was given a scare in the next game when he was 15-30 on his own serve but when Berdych missed a chance to set up two break points his chance was gone.
Afterwards, Murray admitted it had been a tough physical challenge, but he had made the most of his chances when they came along.
"The victory over Berdych was tough physically because the Henman win took a lot out of me," he said.
"I think I played a bit more consistently than him, he started
to make a lot of mistakes in the third set.
"He served very well pretty much throughout the whole match except for one or two games late on and when he served badly I took my chances.
Playing Gonzalez would not be hugely different, but Murray admitted it would be a major test of his ability.
"Playing against him won't be too difficult to playing Berdych because he has a big serve and forehand," he said.
"To beat Gonzalez I'll probably have to play my best ever match."
