Mikhail Youzhny was handed an easy passage into round two of the St Petersburg Open when opponent Karel Beck retired with a knee injury. In a repeat of last year's final, fourth seed and defending champion Youzhny won the first set 6-4 and led 4-1 when Beck was forced to quit.
Seeds Thomas Johansson and Nicolas Kiefer also made it past round one.
Johansson, seeded two, beat Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber while fifth seed Kiefer beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
