US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova double-faulted on match point to allow Russian compatriot Elena Dementieva to reach the Pacific Life semi-finals. Kuznetsova saved four match points as she served to take the final set to a tie-break before the double fault condemned her to a 3-6 6-3 7-5 defeat.
Kim Clijsters beat Conchita Martinez 6-1 3-6 6-2 in the second quarter.
"Three-set matches - good or bad it's always a motivation to get through," said Clijsters.
