Kim Clijsters took another step towards reclaiming the world number one ranking by breezing past Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-2 6-4 to win the Luxembourg Open. The Belgian, who landed her first Grand Slam at the US Open in September, fired two aces to close out the first set.
Groenefeld fought back and was level at 4-4 in the second set before Clijsters' strong backhand eased her to victory.
Clijsters has won 26 of her last 27 games and is catching world number one Maria Sharapova and Lindsay Davenport.
Sharapova leads the rankings with 4,808 points, followed by Davenport with 4,619 and Clijsters with 4,201.
