Switzerland completed a 5-0 Davis Cup victory over Great Britain after Alan Mackin lost 7-5 7-6 (7-5) to Stanislas Wawrinka in the final rubber. Earlier, George Bastl brushed David Sherwood aside 6-3 6-0.
With the tie decided after Saturday's doubles rubber, Sherwood was given his chance by captain Jeremy Bates.
He held his own until the eighth game of the first set but then world number 113 Bastl broke and reeled off eight straight games for victory.
The result was the first Davis Cup whitewash suffered by Great Britain since 1995 when they were beaten 5-0 by Slovakia in Bratislava.
