Captain Jeremy Bates has also selected David Sherwood and Alan Mackin in the squad to face Switzerland on indoor clay in Geneva from 23-25 September.

Murray, 18, made a winning debut in the doubles against Israel in March, but is expected to play singles against a Swiss side including Roger Federer.

British number one Tim Henman retired from Davis Cup competition in January.

However, Bates' side made light of his absence by defeating Israel and setting up the chance to play in the World Group next year.

Murray partnered Sherwood in an impressive doubles win and the pair could reprise that role against the likely Swiss duo of Federer and Yves Allegro.

Mackin has earned a return to the squad for the first time since 2003 thanks to his clay-court ability.

Bates said: "This tie presents a wonderful opportunity for us to play against truly world class opposition and the world's best player Roger Federer.

"This will be a tough tie, but one that we are more than capable of getting a result from.

"We have a chance of playing in the World Group next year and I know the players are determined to give everything they have to try and make that a reality."

Bates reserved special praise for Rusedski and Murray.

"Andy has proved he can compete consistently at the highest level whilst Greg has shown great determination and character to get back inside the world's top 30," he said.
