Ai Sugiyama survived a mid-match wobble to beat Jelena Kostanic and reach round two of the Rogers Cup in Toronto. The Japanese 17th seed, who recently reached the final of the Acura Classic in San Diego, eventually saw off her Croatian opponent 6-2 3-6 6-2.
The only other seed in first-round action, 16th-ranked Tatiana Golovin of France, eased past another Croatian, Karolina Sprem, 6-4 6-4.
France's Marion Bartoli progressed when injured Russian Maria Kirilenko quit.
