Andre Agassi may never play at Wimbledon again |
American Andre Agassi has withdrawn from Wimbledon because of injury. The 1992 singles champion informed the All England Club of his decision by fax on Tuesday, said tournament organizers.
It is thought Agassi opted out instead of taking cortisone injections to kill sciatic pain in his lower back, as he did after losing at the French Open.
There is now a distinct chance the 35-year-old - a winner of all four Grand Slams in a distinguished career - may never grace Centre Court again.
He also pulled out of last year's Wimbledon with a hip problem and has been tipped to round off his career after September's US Open in New York.
A statement from the Wimbledon referee's office read: "Andre Agassi regrets he will have to withdraw from the gentlemen's singles due to injury.
"Mr Agassi says in a fax that it is a regrettable decision and he will miss playing in the most prestigious tournament in the world."
