Andre Agassi's star continued to fade at the Toronto Masters with a 6-3 6-3 loss to Austria's Jurgen Melzer. Melzer, ranked 61st in the world, dominated the American 10th seed from the start of their second round match.
Agassi, 34, a three-time winner of the Canadian hard-court event, is suffering with a long-term hip problem.
But he made no excuses, saying: "I was uncomfortable, he was comfortable. It seemed to stay that way. He did a lot of things well."
Asked whether he would be back next year, Agassi said: "Listen, it's a question mark for me, so I certainly understand it being a question mark for others.
"I don't know if I'll be back, I never know if I'll be back."
An overjoyed Melzer said: "It's the day of my life, I played the match of my life.
"I'm happy I was able to beat him because this could have been one of the last chances against him."
Eight-time Grand Slam winner Agassi is scheduled to take part in next week's Masters event in Cincinnati.
He is bypassing the Athens Olympics, but is entered in tournaments in Washington and Long Island before the US Open begins on 30 August.
