Two backhand errors in a row from Schalken see Roddick take a 30-0 lead on the Dutchman's serve. He wins a long rally to cut the deficit but then sends a forehand long to gift Roddick two break points. Roddick chips the ball back on the first of them, luring Schalken into the net, and Roddick then drills a forehand passing shot down the line to claim the first break of serve in the match. Given Roddick's fearsome serve, this looks like the decisive moment in the match.

The young American promptly double faults to give Schalken a third chance to break but the Dutchman sends a tame backhand into the net and Roddick goes on to win the game with two good volleys.

Schalken wins the first point of the tiebreak but Roddick hits back with two aces. Roddick nets a backhand as Schalken levels at 2-2 but the Dutchman then misses a backhand to give Roddick the first mini-break. The American promptly hands it back with a tame forehand into the net and the players swap ends at 3-3. A Roddick smash gives him the advantage but Schalken controls the next point and puts away a simple volley to make it 4-4. Roddick then mis-hits a forehand miles out to trail 5-4 but bludgeons his way level on the next point, only to give Schalken a set point when he sends a simple volley into the net. The Dutchman misses out when he sends a forehand long and the players change ends at 6-6. Schalken earns another set point when Roddick sends a lob long but Roddick saves it with a brutal serve and earns one of his own with another fierce delivery. A long rally develops and Schalken survives when Roddick mis-times a forehand. The Dutchman goes 8-7 up with a backhand drive volley but Roddick saves the set point with a brave forehand pulled down the line and goes 10-9 up with a fierce forehand cross court on the next point. This time Schalken does not escape, sending a backhand over the baseline to give Roddick the second set.

Roddick nets a couple of volleys to be hauled back to 30-30 but wins the next two points to take the set to a tiebreak.

Consecutive backhand passing shots from Roddick give him a 30-0 lead but he spurns the chance to go to 40-0 when he nets an attempt at a third. The game goes to several deuces before the umpire suspends play because of rain at 1531 BST. The players return to court at 1600 BST and Schalken immediately suffers a bad call as a backhand is called long even though the ball landed on the line, handing Roddick a break point. However, the American cannot take it, dumping a forehand into the net, and Schalken goes on to win the game.

Schalken manages a fine backhand passing shot as Roddick approaches the net on game point and he forces deuce when he puts away a flat forehand from mid-court. Roddick then sends the ball over the baseline but he fights off the break point with some brave, deep shots. Schalken sends a backhand long to hand Roddick game point and the American duly closes out the game.

At 15-30 Roddick produces a great lob to turn Schalken, but then hits his next shot long, much to his frustration. Schalken holds serve without any further alarms.

First set:

Schalken wins the first point on the Roddick serve and goes 2-0 up with a stop volley, but the American breaks back on the third despite falling over during the rally. A forehand volley enables Roddick to make it 2-2 and he edges ahead at 3-2 when Schalken sends a backhand long. The tall Dutchman then nets a backhand volley to lose his serve before Roddick nets a return to make it 4-3. Two unreturnable serves give Roddick three set points and Schalken saves the first with a thumping forehand from the middle of the court. On the second set point Schalken approaches the net and fails dismally with an attempted drop volley to give Roddick the first set.

Roddick shouts for a phone to be turned off after losing the first point but fights back form 40-0 down to force deuce by out-rallying Schalken from the back of the court. Schalken sends a forehand long to give Roddick a break point but the American sends at attempted forehand passing shot wide as Schalken approaches the net. On the next point the players get drawn into a long rally which Schalken wins on the 21st stroke with a glorious backhand deep into the corner. The Dutchman then rips a forehand across court on the angle to take the set to a tiebreak.

Roddick has yet to drop a set at Wimbledon this year, but Dutch 12th seed Schalken is serving well and could pose problems for the American.

The pair have met five times, with Roddick winning four of their matches, most recently in the fourth round of this year's Australian Open.
