Lindsay Davenport regained her world number one spot with victory over Russia's Dinara Safina in the second round of the Kremlin Cup. Davenport won 6-4 6-2 and will overtake Amelie Mauresmo next week to go top of the rankings for the fifth time.
She trailed Mauresmo by just 15 points after winning the Porsche Grand Prix.
France's Mauresmo withdrew from the Moscow tournament after injuring her left thigh in Sunday's final in Filderstadt against Davenport.
"Someone told me at the beginning of the week if I won this (match) I would be the number one," said Davenport.
"Unfortunately, Amelie wasn't able to play here.
"Of course I'm excited but I'd like to be able to keep going and win the tournament as a new number one and not be completely satisfied by just winning today's match."
Davenport has held the top spot on five different occasions for a total of 37 weeks.
In other matches, fifth seed Elena Dementieva eased through her second-round match to earn an eagerly-awaited rematch with fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Dementieva beat Croatian qualifier Sandra Mamic 6-3 6-3 to set up a meeting with Kuznetsova, who beat her in the US Open final.
Dementieva, who turns 23 on Friday, said: "I won't be celebrating if I don't beat her."
Defending champion and third seed Anastasia Myskina recovered from a slow start to oust her Russian Fed Cup team mate Elena Likhovtseva 2-6 6-1 6-0.
She will face sixth seed Vera Zvonareva in another all-Russian quarter-final.
Former world number one Venus Williams also advanced, beating 18-year-old Vera Douchevina 6-0 6-4.
