Henman is aiming to qualify for the Masters Cup in Houston

The 30-year-old is in light training following back and shoulder problems and plans to return at the next Masters Series event on 18 October.

"The rest has done me the power of good and I'm hopeful of hitting some balls soon - perhaps at the weekend," he said on his official website.

Henman is sixth in the race to secure one of eight places at the elite end-of-season Masters Cup in Houston.

Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt and Gaston Gaudio have already qualified for the tournament.

Marat Safin, who lies eighth in the Champions Race, and ninth-placed Andre Agassi are among those hoping to overtake Henman.

After the Madrid Masters, Henman will take part in the Swiss Indoors in Basle before heading to Paris to defend the Masters title he collected in 2003.

Henman said: "Traditionally, it's always a bit frantic at this time of the year for the players that have a chance of qualifying for Houston, and it's nice to be in that position.

"It would be even nicer if I could qualify sooner rather than later so I could enjoy the next few weeks a bit more.

"There are so many points up for grabs in both Madrid and Paris that there are still quite a few permutations.

"But I'm going to concentrate on my own game as I have done throughout the year and hopefully that will get the job done."
