Kim Clijsters's comeback stalled when she had to retire with a left wrist injury in the semi-finals of the Gaz de France Stars tournament in Belgium. Clijsters was playing her first event for almost five months after suffering torn tendons and undergoing surgery on the wrist to remove a cyst.
The Belgian was trailing 6-4 2-2 to Elena Bovina of Russia when she quit.
"As things stand, I do not see her playing anymore this year," said Clijsters' coach Marc Dehous.
"She'll go to the doctors again on Monday to check what happened exactly.
"But as she feels pain in the same place again, we are not very optimistic."
In the first semi-final, Russia's Elena Dementieva beat unseeded Maria Elena Camerin 6-3 6-3.
Dementieva was the clear favourite in Saturday's match, while Italy's Camerin was coming off a gruelling 5-7 7-5 6-4 win over Virginia Ruano Pascual.
Sunday's final will be the Russian's fourth this season.
Bovina has one title this year, beating Dementieva on the way to winning in New Haven, Connecticut.
