Spain's Conchita Martinez lost 6-3 6-3 to Maria Sanchez Lorenzo in the opening round of the German Open. Argentina's Paola Suarez, the 11th seed, beat Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-2 7-5.
The 16th seed Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi of Israel was too good for Bulgaria's Magdalena Maleeva, winning 6-3 6-1.
Local hope Anca Barna delighted the home fans by fighting for over three hours to get the better of Australian Nicole Pratt 4-6 7-6 6-4.
