Result: Henman 3-6 6-4 6-3 Massu

All the action as British number one and sixth seed Tim Henman beats ninth seed Nicolas Massu of Chile in the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters.


Third set

Henman 3-6 6-4 6-3 Massu
Henman seems determined to finish off the job and attacks Massu's serve with the result that he soons has three match points. Another forced error from the Chilean racquet and Henman is into the quarter-finals.

Henman begins with an ace and enjoys an emphatic hold-of-serve.

The crowd are beginning to get into the match as Henman gives his opponent the run-around and earns two break points. Both - and a third - go begging and Massu goes on to hold.

For just the second time in the match, Henman holds serve, clinching the game with an unreturnably out-swinging second serve.

The topsy-turvy nature of the match continues with a positive Henman volley earning him two break points. A winning forehand down the line from the British number one gives produces yet another break.

Once again, Henman struggles on his service game. His loose forehand volley lands beyond the baseline to give Massu a break point and then nets a forehand on the next point to hand a break to the ninth seed.

Massu battles back but a mishit backhand from Henman moon-balls into the corner and the Chilean finds the net with his reply to give the Briton a break point. Henman sends Massu darting all over the court before clinching the break.


First set

Henman struggles once again on his serve and pays the price. Although the Briton has several chances to take the game, he lets them slip and Massu breaks with his first opportunity to take the set.

Henman 3-5 Massu
Normal service has well and truly resumed as Massu holds serve comfortably to move a game of taking the first set.

Henman 3-4 Massu
After being broken three times, Henman stops the rot on his serve as well.

Henman 2-4 Massu
Miraculously Massu holds serve to end the run of five consecutive breaks.

Henman 2-3 Massu
Massu runs down a Henman stop-volley to earn the 10th break point of the set. Henman nets a forehand to hand Massu the break.

Henman 2-2 Massu
The pattern of service breaks continues. Massu double-faults and goes 0-40 down. The Chilean saves one but once again Henman breaks to draw level in the set. No wonder Massu opted to receive after winning the toss.

Henman 1-2 Massu
Both players are struggling on serve and Henman's third double fault brings up two break points for Massu. Henman goes long with a volley and the Chilean once again has the initiative.

Henman 1-1 Massu
Henman seems determined to recoup the break and he immediately attacks the Massu serve. A backhand down the line and a delicately-angled cross-court winner give him two break points. Massu saves the first but clever play from Henman forces the break-back.

Henman 0-1 Massu
After a delay caused by a problem with the net, Henman opens proceedings with a crisp serve-and-volley. It is a scrappy first game from Henman, who commits a double fault as he struggles with his serve. Massu makes the Briton play lots of tough volleys and breaks on his second opportunity.
