Moodie serves time on Martin
Wesley Moodie
Moodie's serve proved too much for Martin
South Africa's Wesley Moodie defeated Todd Martin 6-4 7-6 (7-1) to advance to the second round of the Siebel Open on Tuesday.

Moodie served superbly to punish Martin throughout the match.

"If I could keep it like that I'd be happy," Moody said. "It certainly takes a lot of pressure off and you can build on that."

Martin added: "For me he was impossible to read. He hits every spot on the court and he's consistent."

In other first-round matches, Jan-Michael Gambill outlasted eighth seed Wayne Ferreira 6-7 (12-14) 7-6 (7-5) 6-1.

Ferreira, the only non-American seed in the event, had a match point in the 10th game of the second set but he hit a backhand that tipped off the top of the net and bounced back.

"The thing I did really well that I haven't been doing is just having a better mindset out there," said Gambill.

"I was taking the match one point at a time. There were times I didn't even know the score out there."

Fourth seed Taylor Dent beat fellow American Paul Goldstein 6-4 6-4 in his first match since losing to Andy Roddick in straight sets at the Australian Open.

"I was coming off the most embarrassing day in my tennis life and I didn't know how I was going to rebound," Dent said.

"It was more nerve-racking than it probably looked. I came out and played a solid match - a nice comfort zone for me."
