Amelie Mauresmo thrashed Meghann Shaughnessy to give France a convincing win over the USA in the Fed Cup final. Mauresmo eased past Shaughnessy 6-2 6-1 to give France an unassailable lead in Moscow and they went on to wrap up a 4-1 victory.
It is the second Fed Cup title for the French, who last won the trophy in 1997 against the Netherlands.
France led 2-0 lead after Saturday, with Mauresmo beating Lisa Raymond and Mary Pierce overcoming Shaughnessy.
"I was crying because it was a very emotional moment," said Mauresmo after beating Shaughnessy.
"We were not very lucky in the last couple of years as we have tried very hard but just couldn't make it, so this is a very big win for us."
Shaughnessy said: "I was very tired and it was a very tough match.
"Amelie played very well and I would have really needed to play exceptionally to beat her.
"I wasn't able to and I think that few players would have been able to today."
Loit then saw off Alexandra Stevenson 6-4 6-2 in 54 minutes to put France 4-0 up before the USA finally got on the board in the final rubber.
Martina Navratilova maintained her unbeaten record in the event in the doubles, winning 6-4 6-0 with Raymond against Loit and Pierce.
