Wimbledon shuffles pack
Britain's Alex Bogdanovic
Bogdanovic may have to play off against seven others for a wild card
The Lawn Tennis Association has announced changes to the system for deciding who receives Wimbledon wild cards.

In the past the highest-ranked British players have been given six of the eight wild cards available for the men's and women's tournaments.

However, under the new system, four wild cards will be given to the "most deserving" players.

Two more will be decided via an eight-man play-off featuring the next six highest ranking players, the best junior and one other player to be decided by the All England Club.

The remaining two, which can be given to non-British players, will be awarded at the discretion of the All England Club's championship committee.

BRITISH TOP 10: MEN
30 Tim Henman
70 Greg Rusedski
189 Arvind Parmar
279 Martin Lee
337 Alan Mackin
376 Mark Hilton
430 Richard Bloomfield
433 Jamie Delgado
447 Miles MacLagan
478 James Auckland

The LTA's newly appointed performance director David Felgate said the changes were intended to quash suggestions that the governing body made it too easy for British competitiors to play at Wimbledon.

"The LTA get criticised for just giving it away, but we want to get away from that," said Felgate.

"I think it sends a hard message to players who might be expecting them. Alex Bogdanovic played in the Davis Cup but his ranking was in the 500s and still is.

"He has to improve that quickly to get one of the four wild cards or he is in the play-off."

BRITISH TOP 10: WOMEN
157 Elena Baltacha
169 Anne Keothavong
182 Julie Pullin
206 Lucie Ahl
254 Jane O'Donaghue
302 Hannah Collin
329 Helen Crook
429 Sarah Borwell
445 Joanne Moore
454 Rachel Viollet

First-round losers at Wimbledon last year took home 7,880, while winning one match before bowing out is worth 12,860.

The LTA's director of national men's training, Jeremy Bates, added: "We want to raise the bar, raise what our expectations are for players to be considered for a wild card.

"The ultimate decision is Wimbledon's but we decide those who will have their names put forward.

"It fits into our performance programme. Let's see how badly they want it."

  • Last year's finalist Wayne Arthurs has confirmed that he will return to Nottingham for the Samsung Open in June.
