Henman injury only 'minor'
Tim Henman
The British number one was unbeaten in Birmingham
Tim Henman's shoulder injury will not have a lasting affect on the rest of his career, according to the man who got him fit to play in the Davis Cup last week.

The British number one has been suffering an impingement on his shoulder since before the US Open in August, and had been a major doubt for Britain's clash with Thailand.

Henman had also expressed fears that the strained muscle would never completely recover due to the pressures of the professional circuit.

But strength and conditioning coach Mike Antoniades, who worked with Henman from 11 September until the Davis Cup tie began 10 days later, insists the player can regain full fitness.

"His career is definitely not over," Antoniades told BBC Sport Online. "It's a minor thing.

"He's been pretty lucky with injuries - all power athletes will get injuries, it's part of the job.

"It's how you rehabilitate them and bring them back stronger and ensure they don't happen again.

Henman struggled with his injury in the first match

"With the pressure to participate in tournaments, they often come back too quickly but Tim is not in danger of doing that."

Antoniades, who also works with Chelsea and Ipswich football clubs, admitted that Henman would ideally have had two to three weeks after the US Open to recover.

But with the Thailand match taking on such importance, British Davis Cup physio Mark Bender felt the best approach was to work on strengthening Henman shoulder muscles.

Antoniades was called upon to help and expects to be involved again as Henman enters the busy last few months of the year that build up to November's Masters Cup in Shanghai.

"What happens now depends on how much time he's got, " said Antoniades.

"Tim is going to take a few days off and give me a call to review how we would progress - he needs more work on his strength.

"Probably another week or 10 days to make sure it doesn't recur - he's had a tough few days."
