Boris Becker is set to join the BBC
Becker was known for his athletic playing style
Three-time Wimbledon champion Boris Becker is the latest addition to the BBC television commentary team for the 2002 Wimbledon tennis championships.

Becker said: "As I have said many times, I have always regarded Wimbledon Centre Court as my living room, and I'm really looking forward to seeing this room from a different perspective.

"I am very honoured to be asked to be part of the BBC team, as the BBC for me has always represented the best in sports coverage."

And Becker will be in good company, as fellow three-time winner Chris Evert also joins the BBC's impressive list of commentators and pundits.

The German star made Wimbledon history in 1985 when he became the youngest ever winner of the event, aged 17.

Peter Salmon, director of BBC Sport, said: "Becker's style of play at Wimbledon, with his acrobatic antics, is legendary.

"We're confident that he will bring such excitement to his commentary."

Barbara Slater, executive producer for tennis at the BBC, said: "With John McEnroe, Pat Cash, John Lloyd, and Martina Navratilova with us for the women's final, plus Sue Barker and John Inverdale presenting the daytime and highlight programmes, we can feel proud of a truly first class line-up."

Becker made made his final Wimbledon appearance in 1997, losing to Pete Sampras in the quarter-finals. That was after a career which yielded 49 career ATP singles titles, including six Grand Slam victories.

Evert won all the Grand Slams, including the US Open four years in succession, and enjoyed an astounding 13-year run in which she lifted at least one Grand Slam per year.

Becker also won the Olympic doubles title with Michael Stich in Barcelona in 1992 - one of 13 career doubles titles.

There will also be full coverage of this year's Wimbledon on BBC Radio Five Live and BBC Sport Online.
