The American became the first teenager to win an ATP title since Michael Chang won the San Francisco Open aged 19. The achievement was made the more remarkable considering it was the 18-year-old's first appearance in an ATP clay court event. "I can't even explain it. It's great," a jubilant Roddick said. "This is, consistently, the best I have played. I played five good matches here. We'll see how far I can go."
And he also claimed the scalp of another top American - this time Todd Martin - on the way to the final in Atlanta. Roddick, coached by Frenchman Tarik Benhabiles, won his first title in fewer tries than fellow countrymen Sampras, Chang Andre Agassi and Jim Courier. "They won a lot younger than I did," Roddick acknowledged. "I just won in less tournaments. But it felt good." Malisse reached his second ATP final of the year - but could not capture that first elusive title. "Xavier is a great player. I just had a good day," reflected Roddick. "It was great to have everyone here to see me." | Other top Tennis stories: Links to top Tennis stories are at the foot of the page. | |||
