Should Tyson quit?
What now for 'Iron Mike'?
Mike Tyson claimed his fight with Andrew Golota would be his last. Is it time for 'Iron Mike' to finally hang up his gloves and step out of the ring?

Or, as he emerged victorious from his clash with Golota, albeit in controversial circumstances, should the former undisputed world heavyweight champion go for one last big-money bout with Lennox Lewis?

HAVE YOUR SAY

Mike Tyson remains boxing's biggest name, despite a chequered career in and out of the ring.

Famous for the quick combinations and ruthless power that brought him the world heavyweight crown, he is equally infamous for his personal troubles, time in prison and the portion of Evander Holyfield's ear which he consumed during their second confrontation.

Even when on best behaviour he can't escape controversy and, although he cannot be blamed for Golota's walkout, it is certain that some of the mud will stick to his already tarnished reputation.

Undoubtedly the best at this peak, many would now argue he is not a realistic contender at the top of the heavyweight division.

But a showdown with Lennox Lewis remains the one big fight boxing still yearns to see.

So what now for 'Iron Mike'? Should he stay or should he go?HAVE YOUR SAY

I think Tyson should quit. Since his return to boxing, his fights have been nothing more than publicity stunts. If he does ever get the opportunity to fight Lewis, I hope that he gets floored in the first. I can't believe he has even been allowed to continue boxing after the Holyfield fight and I am disgusted that he is allowed into Britain to fight considering that he is a convicted rapist.
Eliza, Great Britain

Yes - he should quit. He should never have been allowed to return after his prison sentence. He proved he was unstable when he decided to start eating people in the ring!
Martin, UK

Nobody should be forced to retire or quit due to sentiment.

I think he is the best boxer in the world but he will have to prove it again before quitting
  Adrian, Romania
The people close to Tyson are milking him for all they can in the same manner that happened to Ali. If Tyson wasn't around the focus would shift to the criticism of Lewis or the amount of aged fighters still fighting.
Grahame UK., England

I don't think Tyson should quit otherwise it a waste of a great talent. Even though he is not at his best, he is still good enough to stay in the ring to knock out most of the heavyweights.
Yusuf Egamnazarov, Uzbekistan

Tyson is a more like a street brawler rather than a boxer since he returned to boxing. It would be advisable for him to quit before he runs into Lewis.
Muhammad, Birmingham

I sincerely believe that his boxing career would be incomplete without fighting Lewis .So Tyson should take one more fight.
Deji Komolafe, Nigeria

Tyson should have quit after the Holyfield fight. He is a has-been and although he still draws the big crowds, he is just a shadow of his former self and should give up now before it gets embarassing.
Nick, France

I think he should quit now before the whole reputation of heavyweight boxing is ruined forever. Its currently a money spinning joke and has no entertainment value at all. Give us back some real boxing.
Martyn Plumridge, UK

Every time I see Mike Tyson on the box, I lose a little more respect for him. He was one of the all time greats but that was a very long time ago. Now he's just a foul mouthed thug picking up millions for knocking over third rate pros. His antics in the build up to to recent fights have been stomach churning. Boxing needs a new big name.
Dek, UK

I, for one, want Mike Tyson to stay because I am afraid that he would be the only suitable opponent for David Tua, should Tua prevails in his fight with Lewis
Luwi Buchike, New Zealand

No way. Tyson should not quit. I think he is the best boxer in the world but he will have to prove it again before quitting. That's why, if he thinks about retirement, at least he should fight with Lennox Lewis.
Adrian M., Romania

Tyson needs boxing as much as boxing needs Tyson.

Even the people who hate him love to see him boxing
  Abdul Wahid, Hong Kong (China)
Even the people who hate him love to see him boxing. Certainly he does possess the talent & the power. I would love to see him fighting Lewis.
Abdul Wahid, Hong Kong (China)

Not this year, Tyson ! I'm waiting for your ultimate fight against Lennox Lewis ! Like it or not, Tyson is still the man who makes the boxing world come live.
Anwar, Indonesia

I think Tyson should not quit. What would boxing be like without people like him. When Tyson boxes, people watch to see what will happen.
Nicholas, Jamaica

I really can't say I like the guy, but he is one of the more entertaining boxers. To be honest, that is why I find boxing exciting-- it isn't the individuals, it is how well they do it.

I'm tired of watching the dull & pathetic grabbing that most bouts come down to. Tyson and Lewis, at the very least, would be an intriguing match-up. What does Tyson have to lose? Certainly not his reputation?
Stephen Todd, USA/living in England

Iron Mike's name is the best in boxing, so I think he should stay on and fight against Lewis. At his age, he still has the power to become once again the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. Go Mike.
J. Fosu, U.S.A.

Tyson should quit or be forced to quit, he is mentally unbalanced. As for Tyson & Lewis, Lewis has to get passed David Tua first and David Tua will knock Lewis out. Now Tyson v Tua, that would be interesting.
Peter Sutton, Melbourne Australia

Mike Tyson won't retire. Within a year, he'll fight and lose to Lennox Lewis by KO. Even though that should be a signal to him to go away, he won't.

My guess is that he'll hang on longer than he should
  Roger Jackson, USA
My guess is that he'll hang on longer than he should, like most great athletes past their prime.
Roger Jackson, USA

Even if he quits, his face and style will always be remembered. He is already a legend. Let's leave it upto him to decide about quitting, remember he has his life and family to care for too.
Gopi Pradhan, Bhutan

I think he has to leave when he is still in a good position. He must try to regain his reputation as a sportsman before he retires and try and rectify the wrongs he has committed
Jaime, Per

He should fight Lewis and then retire; he is past his prime but still better than Lennox Lewis.
Reggie Watson, USA

Mike Tyson is the greatest boxer and he will never quit boxing before fighting Lennox Lewis. If he wins the fight with Lennox Lewis, it will make him the greatest boxer ever.
Amanuel, US, Oakland

The sooner Tyson retires the better. Get his inevitable humiliation at the hands of Lennox Lewis sorted out soon and we shouldn't have long to wait.
Allister Webb, England

Holyfield's win on point against George Foreman revealed us the power of present day boxers. They are nowhere near to Ali's era. Boxing certainly needs fighters like Tyson and Tyson needs boxing.
Saifuddin, Bombay - India.

This is one of his better publicity stunts. It adds a new dimension to what will be the biggest ticket ever. And it comes a long way from him declaring he wants to eat Lenox Lewis's children. But so long as Don King is pulling all the strings behind the scenes, one knows all too well who the eventual winner would be. I certainly will not be spending anymore money watching boxing, as it has reached the point where I will feel more dignified just handing my money directly to the "King."
Chris Vieira, Trinidad

Tyson is just doing the same stunt that Ali did when he was scheduled to fight Chuck Wepner. He said it would be his last fight so that his next bout brought in the money. If only Tyson was like Ali in more ways.
Will, Scotland

I follow boxing, and sure - I find Tyson intriguing, but it's for all the wrong reasons: I find it fascinating that he's still allowed to box professionally...
Neill, Canada/England

Tyson saying he will retire just means more money being pumped into the "unexepected" Tyson v Lewis fight.

Of course he shouldn't quit. Where else are they going to find an ear-biting, road-rage rapist thug who so compactly and neatly sums up the ethics of the sport today?
  Al Smith, Denmark

Anthony, England

It's a fairly clear choice for Tyson; he can quit, or he can fight Lewis then quit. Tyson was once the greatest; the humiliation Lewis would inflict would wreck what little is left of the Tyson mystique. For his own good it's time to stop.
Anthony, UK

Still the most feared and dangerous boxer in the world, and arguably the best heavyweight of all time. He can dispense with both Golota and Lewis and then call it quits, on top.
Matthew Gebhardt, USA

Of course he shouldn't quit. Where else are they going to find an ear-biting, road-rage rapist thug who so compactly and neatly sums up the ethics of the sport today? Tyson is the epitome of the boxing ideal in the Y2K - a product of media hype. In another time and setting, he would have been remembered as the ultimate fighter, his era has degenerated into a circus, and he has become one of the clowns. There's at least another $100 million in the man yet - do you really suppose he will be allowed to quit?
Al Smith, Denmark

I think Tyson should carry on and give lewis a beating that people will talk about for years. Tyson is the best, second only in modern history to Mohammed Ali. Lewis at his best is no match for Tyson at even 70% of his best. In fact I think the fight should be a winner takes all, that way we can skip the usual 'hyping' up that takes place. If Tyson is not a realistic contender then who else in the whole of the heavyweight scene is ? The reverend Holyfield ? Na, I dont think so...
Zafar, England

I think Tyson should quit now. He has brought shame upon boxing and the sport would be better off without him. Many of his recent fights have ended in disgrace and it is obvious for all to see he is not the fighter he once was.
Kevin, England

I follow boxing, and sure - I find Tyson intriguing, but it's for all the wrong reasons: I find it fascinating that he's still allowed to box professionally...
Neill, Canada/England

When Mike Tyson walks out of the ring for the last time, boxing in the heavyweight division will be changed forever. Some of us remember when Mike Tyson was the dominant fighter in the mid 1980's. Subsequent to the Tyson era, we have had heavyweights throwing title belts in trash cans and different fighters ducking each other. I have always said that if Mike Tyson would have died in a plane crash before he lost to Buster Douglas, he would be considered a legend. Mike Tyson has the right to attempt to rekindle his old glory days in the ring.
Mike Quiggins, USA

Mike Tyson is undoubtedly the heavyweight champion. His decision to quit is based on selling hype so that people purchase more tickets for his showdown with Lennox Lewis. Mike is no fool, he ain`t quitting, not when there's millions to make from one last fight with Lewis.
Trevor Scott, England

Mike Tyson is a champion and I hope he will find the right point in time to go.
Silke Bch, Germany

If we want to be realistic, after Mohammed Ali, Tyson has made boxing once more to be what it should be. I think just the name Tyson attracts even a greater population of non boxing fans that we can't afford to see him quit.He is just too much for the peoples expectations.
Agbor Fred, Germany

Tyson is the greatest boxer after Ali, and no matter what state his mind is in, on his day he can beat anyone, and most certainly Lennox. It is still too early for him to retire, he has many more fights yet.
James, England

He should go. He is a disgrace to his profession and to his country.Hardly a role model for youth as champions like Joe Louis, George Foreman and others were.
Gordon Ramsey, USA

Tyson, retire ? I say lets call his bluff?

Tyson, retire ? I say lets call his bluff? Within a year he'll be fighting Lewis.
  Neil Nakan, Guyana
Within a year he'll be fighting Lewis. A publicity stunt, that's what his comment should be recognised as.
Neil Nakan, Guyana

Even after all these years Tyson still has the ability to be world champion. He does not have the skill he once had, but still enough talent to get past todays mediocre heavyweights
Muzamil, London, England

I just saw his fight against Golota, well the few rounds of it as Golota ran away like a cow. Tyson, despite all what public opinion, is a great, great boxer and despite being over 30 he still has a punch I wish never to receive ! Tyson was the youngest winner of the world champion title. He might be the oldest one to get it again and again. It is always a pleasure to watch him fight.
Marc Quattrini, New Zealand

Tyson should not quit. We need guys like him to be in the ring. He is a biggest draw in boxing and whenever he is fighting you feel that you are watching boxing not those silly touch games played by other boxers. As for Lewis - your bad day is around the corner, prepare for your retirement package.
Zim K, Malawi

I feel sorry for Tyson at this moment, but surely he shouldn't retire. He is by far the most exciting and still the biggest draw in boxing. I would rather watch a shell of the old Iron Mike than to watch the boring Lewis.
Felix, Uk

No way Tyson should not quit until he has retained the undisputed champion of the world title, He has always been a winner not a loser !!!!
raja farooq, uk

Like him or loathe him Tyson is still the biggest draw in boxing and Golota's mental breakdown will only serve to enhance his reputation as an awesome opponent. The only way he will ever leave boxing is after he has well and truly met his match. Lennox Lewis is the man to do that so the sooner the fight happens the better, and maybe then we'll see the back of Tyson for good.
Phil, UK

Yet again the Mike Tyson freak show has ended predictably - the only surprise this time was that he managed to fight an opponent that was actually more mentally unhinged than himself. He should give boxing and its real fans a break and take his thuggery back out on the streets where it belongs. He's long been a spent force and his performance against Golota did nothing to suggest he was back to his best.
Jon, USA

I feel sorry for Mike Tyson
  Mark, UK

It has to be said for once I feel sorry for Mike Tyson. I'm by no means his biggest fan but against Golota he fought a good clean fight - and still ended up surrounded by controversy. Perhaps he should read the signs and quit after all.
Mark, UK

The question is not whether Tyson should quit boxing, but rather, why would he want to? He is by far and away the biggest draw in boxing. The fight against Golota is more expensive to purchase than the upcoming Lewis fight, which is for the title. While Tyson may be a deplorable human being, his demeanor and sheer power will always be a draw. Lennox Lewis is technically superior as a boxer, but the combination of that damn British accent and his methodical, if not boring fighting style, makes him as marketable as an insurance seminar.
Ken Kohut, United States

Whether he should quit or not depends on your outlook. Do you prefer a technically impressive fight with intelligence speed and strength being brought together, i.e Lewis, or brute force and ignorance, Tyson. If you like the dangerous latter then you'll think he should stay. I think he should go. But only after a damn good scrap with Lennox!!
Steve Phelps, England

Mike Tyson is a convicted rapist and should never have been allowed to box again after he was released. It will be a good day when Mike Tyson hangs up his gloves.
Ed Barker, UK

Tyson will be forced into retirement following the severe beating he will get from the awesome Golota.
Leonard Smeja, Poland

Not until Lewis has beaten him.
Keith Taylor, Finland

He should have given up a long time ago, he's just a freak show now - a clown, it's his name that draws the crowds, the ability and flair has long since gone.
Kenneth, England

Tyson may not be a role model or philanthropist extraordinaire, but one thing that he is is a ringside attraction. And let's face it, looking at the uninspiring state of boxing today, he is more of a blessing than a curse to the sport.
Razal Minhas, Pakistan
