Woodward names tour squad
Sir Clive Woodward
Sir Clive Woodward has retained 17 members of England's World Cup-winning squad for this summer's trip to New Zealand and Australia.

World Cup stars Jason Robinson, Will Greenwood and Ben Kay will be rested, while the 30-man party includes four uncapped players, Leicester's Harry Ellis, Sale's Andy Titterrell and Bath's Matt Stevens and Michael Lipman.

This is what you thought of Sir Clive's choice?

The Scrum V message boards are closed for essential maintenance, but will be back in action from Wednesday morning.

Henry Paul should have been included in the tour to Australlia and New Zealand, as he has been the most consistant English centre in the Premiership all season. I also feel Alex Brown and Andy Hazell could have been considerd, but as you have probably guesses I am a Gloucester fan
Mark, England

Overall a solid core with some refreshing additions. Encouraging to see that eleven of the squad are 24 or under.
Malc Owen, England

All those of knocking Phil Christophers obviously havn't seen the way he has been playing for Leeds all season. He will prove a few of you wrong, I promise.
Johnny Caddick, England

I think it's great to see some new faces in the squad
Gary Sullivan, England
Clive guided us to a World cup by doing things his way...who are we to argue with his selection now. I like the inclusion of the young players and the rest for Robinson and Greenwood etc. I think it goes to show how much Woodward is already focused on 2007. We will win again.
DanCr, England

I am very pleased to see Harry Ellis in the squad. He has been the form English scrum-half in the Zurich Premiership since Christmas and is starting to fulfil the promise he showed two years ago.
Ian Hicks, England

I think it's great to see some new faces in the squad. Yes we will miss the talent of Robinson and the physical presence of Kay, but England should not be scared of experimenting and losing if it happens. We may have to except we are not the no1 ranking team at the moment, but we will be if a few stars materialise from the large pool of young and promising players we have.
Gary Sullivan, England

I feel the need to defend the selection of Christophers. I see the names of Garvey, Monye et al being mentioned but do wonder why? You can not doubt their attacking prowess when it comes to speed and strength. Though how about the rest of their game? I have only ever witnessed Garvey pass the ball once and I know he can't kick. He is also frail in defence and has a tendency to get sucked into the play. Monye has more to his game but has only come to the fore in the latter half the season. Christophers has been playing well all year, is a good footballer and can cover a multitude of positions.
John, England

I think that Woodward has made the right decisions and will justify blooding the new players. I think that everybody on that plane deserves to go and they wouldn't have gone if Woodward didn't think that they were good enough. Woodward is a great man and if the coach of the world champs can't make good decisions then who can?
Adam Vosper, England

I think the balance of the squad is about right
Alex, UK
The forwards will have to produce 'white orcs on steroids' form once again to stand a chance on this tour. Provided we win enough ball, Hodgson can pull the strings of a back line that needs to find a spark after a dissapointing 6 Nations. Tindall to cart it up the middle, James S-D to dance round the southern hemisphere showboats. Shaw must play ahead of Borthwick and why isn't Garvey in the squad!?
Scottie, Englishman in Oz

I think the balance of the squad is about right, but I think Woodward could have gone one step further by taking Monye of Harlequins and Smith of Leicester, possibly at the expense of Christophers who has underperformed this season and Waters who is a good pro but may lack the pace to be effective at international level.

Monye and Smith are both shoe-ins for 2007 and have been outstanding form this season, and I think they would benefit from touring with the senior squad. Palmer, Brown, Hazell and Vyvyan are also unlucky but that's a sign of the healthy competition for places in the back five of the scrum.
Alex, UK

I agree with all above Christophers. I can't see why. Surely another fullback of experience. Very pleased for Lipman he has earnt his chance. My XV Woodman, Thomson, White, Shaw, Grewcock, Jones, Hill, Dallagio, Ellis, Barkley, Voyce, Abbott, Tindall, Cohen and Lewsey. Watch the current Super 12. They will not compete with this sides physicallity.
MK, England

Why Woodward continues to disregard Henry Paul is shocking in my eyes. He is one of the most exciting centres England have to offer, both in defense and attack. He has vision, skill and is a great footballer.
Adrian Payne, England

I think that Jamie Noon should be going Down Under
Hannah Collins, UK
The inclusion of Lipman is inspired, he was exceptional for Bath alongside Andy Beattie in the backrow. One must ask what do players such as Henry Paul, Paul Volley and Alex Brown have to do to get recognition that they deserve?
Samwise, UK

England will realise how important Kay is when he doesn't play. He controls the lineout and provides the squad with brains aswell as muscle. Great to see Flatman in the squad, he is the class loosehead in the Premiership.
Rick James, UK

Re The Phil Christophers debate. I'm not too familiar with Cueto who seems to get mentioned a lot here but I will say that I have watched Christopher's play a lot and he has the best side-step I have seen. He's a bit like watching a latter day Duckham. In fact the player he most resembles in the world is Doug Howlett.
James, UK

I might be a bit biased being a Falcons fan but I think that Jamie Noon should be going Down Under and not to the Churchill Cup. Noon has had a great club season and really deserves a chance to show Clive Woodward how well he can play against the world's toughest competitors
Hannah Collins, UK

It's good to see Simon Shaw's inclusion. This should see him cement his place with the England 1st XV. His strength combined with Dallaglio will help to replace some of what's been lost in the forewards retirements.
Matthew Rickard, Australia

This tour should be used as an opportunity to blood new players
Jon Clarke, New Zealand
In the build up to the announcement of the team, I was worried about the potential for a repeat of the 'Tour To Hell'. But looking at the squad, even taking into account the high profile names that won't be going, you get a real feel for the depth of talent available to Sir Clive Woodward.

This should be a highly competitive squad, and though we may not win them all, it is a great opportunity to blood England's future stars.
Sir Cumference, Australia

Phil Christophers is woeful.
Paul Marchand, England

As an Englishman currently residing in New Zealand I'm filled with mixed emotions regarding this team. This tour should be used as an opportunity to blood new players as we only have two years to form the core of the team who will defend our title as the World Champions in France.

The Kiwi press has already warned the public not to take too much notice of their expected winning margins against England in June but I think that prediction may be a little premature, and we all know what happened when they underestimated the Aussies in the World Cup don't we! I'm confident we will get at least one victory in NZ, but the Aussies will be a different story altogether!
Jon Clarke, New Zealand

Clive is a smart coach, he knows England can't win without Jonny combined with the retirement of the core of his forward pack, they face a tough road trip in June. So why not rest the of the key players in the team and make it an opportunity for the young blokes to have a go. Which is really what end of seasons tours are about. It also provides an excuse for Clive when England get beaten!
Dave, Australia

I feel Clive has made a major step in the right direction
Chris Ormonde, England
Have to agree on Phil Christophers, over-rated and not a touch on players like Garvey, Monye and Cueto, should not be going to Churchill Cup let alone to Australia and New Zealand. Alex Brown should have been on the full tour ahead of Corry and Garvey, Stuart-Smith and Smith should all have been in the Churchill Cup squad.
Kev, England

What is Clive thinking exposing a non-international class player like Christophers against the likes of Tuqiri, Howlett, etc - he'll get munched!
Mark Javed, United Kingdom

I feel Clive has made a major step in the right direction. Harry Ellis, best scrum half in the premiership this season and Clive has noticed. I am however disappointed that Andy Goode is not going. Having been a powerhouse for the Tigers this season, he offers so much, attack, defence and is the best kicker beside Wilko in the premiership. Works well with Ellis and if Olly Smith was fit I feel if he would of gone England would have a very exciting, strong young team.
Chris Ormonde, England

The whole squad make perfect sense to me except Phil Christophers, who is surely not being asked to cover full back. Lesey is the only fullback in the squad and he normally plays wing for Wasps. Matt Peery has had a great end of season for Bath and has all that experience. Fraser Waters ahead of Henry Paul was unexpected. No-one could deny Martin Corry if they had seen the last two Leicester games - he looks like a test starter again.
Jeremy B, UK

It's good to see a few new faces and good to see Simpson-Daniel back
Bob Finlinson, England

Definitely agree with Matthew re. Martin Corry - he must be the most lucky man in English rugby - drafted in as a replacement to make the Lions test team in 2001, then picked ahead of Shaw for the original World Cup squad and now he gets into the tour party when Ben Kay has been having a rest in recent weeks and so could have gone instead as a 4th second row.

Paul Volley has been playing out of his skin in the big end of season games for Wasps and could have gone as a specialist back row instead of having Corry who has had a largely anonymous season and is just a cover for either position rather than contender for test place!!
Richard, UK

Christophers? Why not Monye,Garvey or Cueto? Where is the cover at full back? I think Corry has earnt his place as has Voyce and Lipman.Shame theres no place for Volley or Hazell.
Gavin Webster, Surrey

Why Mark Cueto isn't in and Phil Christophers is, is beyond me!
Danny Boy

What more does Alex Brown have to do to be considered by Sir Clive. He was without any question the best lineout jumper in the Premiership all season and he adds so much more to the game both in attack and defence. He's young aswell and with Ben Kay not going down under what a chance it would of been to get some valuable experience.
Chris Ormonde, England

I think Cueto not going is a major oversight.
George Ruddlesden, England

It's good to see a few new faces and good to see Simpson-Daniel back. I can't see us beating Oz but looks good for the future
Bob Finlinson, England

What's important is who plays in summer 2007 in Fance. Now is the time to see who can perform and discarding those who can't. There is a good balance in both squads and one could make cases for so many that missed out and comfort should be taken from the wealth of talent that there is. Let's just back the man's judgement. It wasn't too bad last October!
Andrew Perry, Lancashire England

I think with that team Woodward better hope Henry makes a few mistakes with his first All Black team or else the English will be in for a real hiding in all three games. As an AB fan it's a bit disappointing to see such a weak team going to tour NZ!!
BT Kiwi, England

I have to agree with Jamie Kirkaldy; Christophers is not in the same class as some others Sir Clive could have chosen. Ollie Smith is not even in the Churchill Cup squad so not sure what is going on there. Its going to be a tough old tour for them but I think we can win two out of three.

Let's play the new guys after all we are WC holders and have nothing to prove
Justin Hunter, Devo
Lipman fully deserves his chance, he's been the outstanding openside this year and could be the one to take over Back's role as organiser of the defence. Good to see Voyce in there. I now wish Bath hadn't let him go last season! Also strange to see so many top names in the Churchill Cup squad such as Henry Paul, Alex King, surely their talents could be used in the senior tour to Aus and NZ! Time will tell if Sir Clive has got it right this time!
JB, UK

The squad doesn't look too depleted, the inexperience at 10 and in the 12, 13 area should not cause concern as these new guys need time to develop and there is no better place than down south. Just look what happend in 98' and the likes of JW who was a nobody, you have to play them and it can only be beneficial in the long run. Let's play the new guys after all we are WC holders and have nothing to prove, the Ozzies will no doubt state we don't deserve to, so why not just do what we want for a change, Clive play the likes of Stevens, Abbott, Voyce
Justin Hunter, Devon

No Henry Paul? what does the man have to do? Also no real recognised openside. Paul Volley and Andy Hazell have been outstanding for two years now and no opportunity to impress. Ugo Monye looks the part too and I would have gone for him.
Chewy, UK, London

My constant worry re England is that the 'back three' always lack real international pace. The inclusion of Christophers is therefore even more glaring. He does not have top pace even domestically let alone on the international field. We should have taken Moyne or someone who is rapid.
Peter Breen, UK

Thought Alex Brown and perhaps Marcel Garvey were worth a look
Dan Couldrey, England
With someone like Jason Robinson, IF he isn't starting, who can provide cover for three positions potentially, Wing, Full Back and Centre to go with someone like Christophers is suicidal. I definitely agree he hasn't done enough and would have much rather seen Garvey on the list.
D, Surrey, England

Why no Henry Paul as the form back in the Zurich Premiership? Also thought Alex Brown and perhaps Marcel Garvey were worth a look?
Dan Couldrey, England

Sir Clive has had to make some tough calls going into this tour but is still taking a side that will have the talent to win all three matches, the pack particularly looks solid with the inclusion of Julian White and hopefully Simon Shaw to start ahead of Steve Borthwick, the Southern hemisphere teams have consistently show that they can be exposed at the set piece.

England should look to expose this. My starting XV to beat the All Blacks and Australia would be as follows: Flatman, Thompson, White, Shaw, Grewcock, Jones, Hill, Dallagio, Dawson, Barkley, Cohen, Tindall Abbott Voyce and Lewsey with Stevens definitely on the bench as an impact player as the opposition tires.
Gareth Rackley, England

All in all, good balanced squads
Tim Hague, England
Christophers! Why, when you have Cueto, Hanley, Moyne, Garvey, et al, would you plump for someone who has already been found wanting at the highest level? And no Olly Smith strikes me as a glaring omission. I don't particularly buy Kay being 'rested' either. If he's only going to take three locks, with Corry as cover, I think he has the best three in the country as it is. I probably would have gone with Martyn Wood over Harry Ellis as well, though it's a tight call. Pleased for Voyce and Lipman though.
Jamie Kirkaldy, UK

Good choices I think; its a shame that Ollie Smith and Sheridan are hurt. The only person who might have been worth a look at over both squads is Garvey.

I am glad the statement on Robinson, Greenwood and Kay is 'rested' as it shows due respect. All in all, good balanced squads, though the first team has no full back cover.
Tim Hague, England

There is no way that Phil Christophers and Martin Corry have done enough to gain their places in the squad. There are much better players, like Mark Cueto Richard Haughton that deserve a place.
Matthew Gibbens, England
