Q&A: Jimmy Greaves
Jimmy Greaves
Greaves is Tottenham's record goalscorer
Goalscoring legend Jimmy Greaves answered your footballing questions.

Greaves is one of England's finest ever strikers, scoring an incredible 44 goals in just 57 international appearances.

He enjoyed a glittering club career at Chelsea, AC Milan, Tottenham and West Ham United, netting 357 goals in 516 appearances.

After retiring he became a popular TV presenter with ex-Liverpool striker Ian St John.

A selection of your best questions to Greaves appear below.

Simon Tilbury, UK

What do you think is the problem with the current Spurs side? Is it the players or the management team?

I think it's beginning to look like the management are having problems with some of their players. They need to be ironed out very quickly.

Spurs fans I meet are very disillusioned with the situation - the prodigal son returned and everybody expected it to become great again, but it hasn't. I wouldn't think he's got longer than Christmas to put it right.

Ian Castle, UK

Is there an available manager who, in your opinion would do a better job for Tottenham than Glenn Hoddle?

There are not many managers around at the moment. They would have to look for a manager who is already in a job. Sooner or later the Spurs board will be forced into a decision either way and we will find out who's up for the job.

Michael, Portsmouth

What do you make of the speculation linking Harry Redknapp to Spurs? Would he be a success at the Lane?

Harry's a great guy and a good friend of mine. He's been an extremely successful manager but I'm not too sure he would want the challenge. He had offers before he went to Portsmouth but turned them all down.

I'm not sure he would take on such a difficult challenge. But he's got the personality and approach with players and I'm sure he could be a success at Spurs. But he just doesn't need the pressure any more.

Sarah M, Lancashire

Why did Spurs let Teddy Sheringham go? Do you think it was a mistake?

There comes a time when managers have to let players go. You don't know what demands Sheringham was making, so the manager has to weigh every option up.

I think he was right to let him go. Right now Portsmouth and Sheringham are having a purple patch, but this might not be the same for the rest of the season.

Nick, Stortford

Do you think Spurs should have stuck with George Graham?

Probably. I found it hard to come to terms with the hostility George got at White Hart Lane as he is an outstanding manager. There was no real reason to get rid of him and I think in hindsight it was a mistake.

Robin Withington, United Kingdom

Many of your goals were scored after you had rounded the goalkeeper. Why do you hardly ever see this today?

Striker's just haven't got the ability to do it these days!

Nigel, Wales

Who was the greatest goal scorer you ever played against?

It's very difficult to say. I played against some of the best. Geoff Hurst, Roger Hunt, Brian Clough, Dennis Law was a great goalscorer, Ferenc Puskas as well.

George Best was the greatest footballer I've ever seen, but if I had to say one, it would be Gerd Muller because of his incredible record.

John Hunt, South Korea

If you could have your life all over again, would you prefer to play in the 1960s or would you like to play nowadays with the big money boys?

Can you guess what the answer is! The thought of taking home 80,000 a week! I can't comprehend it.

I wouldn't mind taking home 80,000 a year! It's money that's beyond an old footballer like me. I'd definitely take the money.

Stuart Haines, Bristol, England

Jimmy, if you were playing nowadays in the Premiership, who would you play for and why?

Any of my old clubs. I never played for the Arsenal so I don't know. I'd be very happy to go back to Tottenham. I would be very happy to go to West Ham as they've got a good chance of coming up.

But the thought of playing for Chelsea is very exciting. It must be fantastic. At the moment I'd go to Chelsea because at least I'd get some service.

Eric, Cambs

So, what do you make of the Chelsea's Russian Revolution? Would you like to be part of it?

YES!

David, Bush Hill Park

How much do you think Chelsea would pay for your signature now?

You'd have to ask Chelsea Football Club about that. I had the misfortune in 1957 when I signed for Chelsea that there weren't many rich Russians about. In fact, there weren't any Russians about!

Mathew Shires, UK

If you could play up front with any current Premiership striker, who would it be?

Alan Shearer in his prime.

Tom

You were one of the first players to try your luck overseas at AC Milan. Why do you think English players have failed to make an impact abroad?

Very difficult to say. They just don't seem to have the mentality.

Simon, New Zealand

What do England, as a footballing nation, need to do to win the World Cup?

Pray very hard! We aren't good enough. We have just played against two sides of Conference standard and we struggled.

Jim, UK

Greavsie, surely in your heyday, sides like Liechtenstein would have received a good 10-0 thrashing. Do you think the 'lesser' nations are starting to improve now, or is the England team deteriorating?

A bit of both really. We never had the luxury of playing so many of these minnows back then. I suppose the smallest country we played was Luxemburg and we scored nine. Teams like that should provide cannon fodder, it's not really good enough.

James Legge, England

How did you feel after missing out on playing in the World Cup final?

Sad, drained, fed up. It was going to be the highlight of my career and it never happened. It's one of those things you have to live with and get over. It was a very sad occasion.

Howard Jones, England

Should Bill Nicholson have been England manager?

I don't think he ever wanted it.

Nick Wdowczyk, England

Do you think Wayne Rooney will live up to the hype which is being said about him? Do you think he is the man to give the England team that extra edge?

I hope he does. He's got all the makings of a great footballer, but it's not going to happen overnight as he needs experience. If I was Eriksson I'd keep him in the side. It would be sad if it didn't happen as he's got such tremendous ability.

Trevor O'Sullivan, Ireland

Will you ever attempt another link up with Ian St John? Have you been asked ever to get back together?

We'd get back tomorrow but nobody wants us!

David Pollard, UK

Which particular moment in your career made you think, "Yes!, this is what football is all about"?

The whole of my career was like that. I look back and think the whole thing was just great. The 1963 Cup Winners Cup final was excellent.

And congratulations to LGB of Enfield who wins a copy of Jimmy's autobiography Greavsie for posing this question.

Jimmy, do you still think football is a funny old game?

Not to a lot of managers it isn't!

But, if you are Ken Bates and you suddenly find that instead of being 90m in debt someone's just cleared your debts and you are going round Europe drinking champagne, to Ken it must be a funny old game.

To those that are struggling at the bottom of the Premier League, it's not so funny!
