Is Caddick right to retire?
England and Somerset fast bowler Andrew Caddick has announced his retirement from one-day international cricket

Is he right to bow out now?

Andrew Caddick says he is retiring in order to give England's younger bowlers the chance to establish themselves before the next World Cup.

New Zealand-born Caddick has played in 54 one-day internationals, and taken 69 wickets at an average of 28.47.

Despite a shaky start to the World Cup, the 34-year-old proved he still had plenty to offer in the one-day game with an explosive four for 35 against Australia.

Is Caddick right to retire from one-day internationals? Will his decision affect England?

Its a shame Caddick had to retire. My only concern is that who is there to lead the bowling attack?

Anderson doesn't need the pressure, Flintoff's a first change bowler, & I don't know whats happened to Hoggard. The team will probably have to bring Goughie back, if he is fit
Robert Sparkes, England

It's a pity Caddick didn't retire a couple of seasons ago. His contribution nowadays is spasmodic.
Dave Holman, Philippines

Harmison, Jones, Tudor, Anderson, Flintoff. Not a bad line-up to fill in the role that Caddick has played. Question is how will they hold up against combinations like Hayden-Gilchrist and Tendulkar-Dravid? Not to forget Yuvraj-Kaif and Martyn,Langer-Ponting?

Caddick should be there to see these new bowlers through until they are fully confident.
Gurpreet Kahlon, India/Austria

Caddick sometimes bowled well ... most of the time he didn't .. he was never world class .. his retirement strengthens the team
Guy McMillan, England

Counting three wickets against India is ludicrous as they were in the last over. He was treated with disdain by India's openers. All I can say that he had a very loud mouth in the world cup- especially on the eve of match against India.
Ravi, Newport Beach, CA

He was a good test bowler with Gough around, but he can't lead an attack as the Ashes highlighted so dismally. If Gough or someone of a similar nature can come back to Test cricket then I'd keep him, otherwise I'd drop him for both because he's more of a liability than a match winner these days if people actually look at the figures from the matches rather than his averages.
Russel, UK

Caddick's performances have been variable over the years, but I would argue that over the last few years he has been the best England bowler - reflected in his world rating.

Caddick's been a great servant for our country and by continuing in the test side, he can give plenty more
Michael Gundy, England

On his day he is a great bowler and he will be missed in the one-day side. But all credit to him for stepping aside for younger players - I hope they can match Andy's performances.
Robin, UK

I think Andy Caddick is right to bow out. He's been a great servant for our country and by continuing in the test side, he can give plenty more. It gives the chance for Harmison and hopefully Simon Jones to cement their place in the one-day team. We have a strong youth contingent and we can improve. Well done, Andy. Good thinking.
Michael Gundy, England

Caddick still has more to offer to the Test side, and with Hussain there he should remain for a little while yet, until the likes of Anderson, Jones and Harminson have developed more
Michael Gonta, England

Great Cricketers are not selfish and it is the right time for Caddick to quit from one-dayers.

England should select about six or seven young fast bowlers, train them and give enough exposure to international cricket so that they will be ready for the next World Cup.
Jaya, Canada

Not a bad idea to hang up your boots when they people are asking why, rather than why not? England have some fine young fast bowlers coming up the ranks and all they need is a bit of fine tuning. Good luck Caddick - you did a good job throughout your career.
Dushy, Canada

He is definitely right - he is not an international class player and one would expect him to move on from the Test scene later this year when the selectors realise this.
David, UK

I suppose it is a start, but for the sake of English cricket he should retire from test cricket whilst he is at it. Sadly Caddick will go down in the history books as a cricketer who was world class when he wanted to be, but rarely did.
Simon, UK

Simon is spot on, just look at the difference in his average between the 1st and 2nd Innings'. He is not a pressure bowler !!
