Who do you want for 2003?
Glen Roder ponders his next move in the transfer market
Tell us who you would like to see at your club when the transfer window opens again on 1 January.

Which player can turn your season?

The controversial transfer window opens at midnight on 1 January when clubs will have just one month to strengthen their sides for the remainder of the season

And there are sure to be large sums swapping hands as managers grasp the opportunity to strenghthen their squad.

Is there a player who can bolster your title challenge? Or do you need an experienced defender to plug your leaky defence?

Who would you like to see at your club?

This debate is now closed. A selection of your e-mails appears below.

Although the Arsenal team is strong, I believe by bringing Darren Huckerby in, he might be able to create something upfront for Henry. In defence, I would bring in Real Madrid's captain Hierro. My ultimate dream is that Wenger will lure Becks and Keane away from United.

The player which I would most like to see Newcastle United buy this January is Les Ferdinand

Robert Armstrong, UK

My second choice defender would have to be Man Utd's John O'Shea. I believe he has a lot of potential. We also need to look into some up and coming goalkeepers to take over from Seamen when he retires.
Gregg, South Africa

Southampton don't need a keeper, they need someone who can play off James Beattie. A fast runner with lots of stamina, like James Milner, Kanu or Marco di Vaio. A creative midfielder would be useful, like Bowyer and someone to replace Bridge like Christian Chivu from Ajax.
Paul, England

I think Arsene Wenger should go for Ulrich Rame from the French club Bordeaux. He is the French second keeper after Fabien Barthez and I think he is one of the best keepers in the world. In my opinion, he should have replaced Barthez already.
Alex, France

Liverpool may as well cash in on Heskey and go for Michael Ballack instead.
David Morrison, England

Man Utd should get Shevchenko or some cheaper stars like Viduka or Wesley Sonk.
Vikesh, England

As a Grimsby town fan I would like to see Mikey Boulding, Martin Pringle and John Oster at the club. These players will definitely help us stay up!
Andy GTFC, UK

I'd like to see Kleberson come to Leeds as we've been missing that edge in the centre of midfield. Maybe we should sell Mark Viduka and then bring in either James Beattie or Eidur Gudjohnsen both of whom are capable of scoring goals.

I wouldn't mind seeing Andy Gray in a Leeds shirt again as he's doing a good job for Bradford and getting the goals. I think he could come back and do the job in the Premiership.
Ste, England

I think that any club in the Premiership should attempt to sign Sergei Rebrov. I am a Spurs supporter and would love to see him stay but it is clear that the striker is not in Glenn Hoddle's plans. At a low price, I'm sure he can prove himself to be one of the top strikers in Europe.
Glen, England

The player which I would most like to see Newcastle United buy this January is Les Ferdinand from Spurs. This would reunite the formidable strike force that he and Shearer once had and would give Newcastle a proper shot at a piece of silverware this season or maybe next.
Robert Armstrong, UK

The same players have figured on this page far too much - look further afield! Doni, Fiore, Gattuso, Zalayeta, Di Vaio, Camoranesi, Micoud, Mutu, Adriano and Kallon would be far superior to many mentioned here.
Martin, UK, Australia

I think Man Utd should buy Harry Kewell and take back Jaap Stam from Lazio. Man Utd need a better midfielder on the left as Ryan Giggs is injury prone and his form has not been good. Fortune can replace Giggs but he cannot compete with Kewell. Man Utd need a centre-back as Blanc will leave them next season and Jaap Stam and Rio Ferdinand would not let any balls near the goal as they both are highly skilled and very fast.
Varun Rajgarhia, India

I think Liverpool should buy Hakin Yakin and Harry Kewell. They should sell El Hadji Diouf because Gerard Houllier just wasted 8m for nothing.
Hasan, UK

Manchester United should pursue Harry Kewell. He is a brilliant player that can add depth in midfield or as a striker.

I feel we lack cover on the left, Giggs and Fortune are excellent but injury prone. World class lefties are a rarity these days.

While we're at Leeds, let's pick up Alan Smith too. Forget spending the whole lot on one player, like Shevchenko, and buy two or three players. Let's concentrante on quality AND quantity!
Blair Hill, UK

I think the signing of Julius Aghahowa of Nigeria by Bolton in January would help to solve their inconsistency of scoring goals. I think Big Sam should consider this move.
Popoola Olaoluwa, Nigeria

As a Coventry City fan, I would like to see the return of Gary Breen and Coiln Hendry, no matter what anyone else says.
Joe Simmons, England

Arsenal pairing David Trezeguet with Henry up front will give every European team the shakes

Ade, USA

As a Spurs fan I would love to have a 'big' target man to partner Keane up front, such as Morientes or Kevin Phillips. Also, Bowyer would be great in midfield.
Andy Hoult, England

Being a Blue in exile I don't get to see Everton as often as I like. Although I think we are playing great this year we are still lacking something - a creative midfielder would give us that extra little something we missed in our last three games (all draws).

The best I have seen here in Germany is Tomaz Rosicky of Dortmund. Basturk is also pretty good but I like Rosicky's temperament - he seems more passionate than Basturk.

At the cheaper end of the market, Igor Demo of Mnchengladbach is a goalscoring midfielder in the Gus Poyet mould who I think would also do well at Goodison.
Stu, Mnchengladbach, Germany

Arsenal pairing David Trezeguet with Henry up front will give every European team the shakes. As an Arsenal fan, just thinking about it puts a broad smile on my face.
Ade, USA

There is only one man to dig west ham out of trouble... John Hartson. Terry Brown should show the fans that he cares and get his wallet out for once instead of taking money from sales of Rio and Lampard to finance the building of the stadium.

I would also like to see a solid centre-back at the heart of the defence instead of Repka. Maybe Taribo West on a free. Izzet in midfield wouldn't be bad either.
Chris Smith, England

As a Leeds supporter I would advocate the sales of Duberry, Dacourt, Viduka and last but not least the mighty Jacob Burns! Emerton and Kleberson are names that have been bandied about but I would rather see Michael Dawson and Barry Ferguson on their way to Elland Road.
Laurence Rowe, UK

As a WBA fan I think we need to strengthen our central defence and also need a striker who can come in and score 10 goals this season and help us survive. A raid on cash-strapped Derby could be the answer - in Chris Riggot and Malcolm Christie.
Eddie Kemp, England

AFC Wimbledon hey need a big signing to boost their title challenge - Gazza maybe?

Hemmo, Cheam

Sheffield Utd should most definitely buy Jon Harley. They complain of no cash but the cup run could soon clear that problem. They should also hang on to their young players, at least until the season finishes.
Paul Taylor, England

Robbie Fowler at Man City? Maybe, I think at 7m he's worth the risk. I think with Wanchope and Macken to come back though we don't really need him. Wayne Rooney on the other hand!
Nick, UK

Everybody is aware of the success that AFC Wimbledon are experiencing at present. They have the support of the nation, with massive attendances regularly. They need a big signing to boost their title challenge. Gazza maybe?
Hemmo, Cheam

As unlikely as it is, I would love Chelsea to sign a right-sided midfielder. Stanic is rubbish, Gronkjaer has pace but can't cross and De Lucas is still settling into the English game.

Geremi of Real Madrid would be sensational, but may be too expensive for us. Bowyer would be a good buy as well, but his signing may cause unrest in the camp as he's a bit of a nutter. So my choice would be Geremi at 6.5m.
Grant de Smidt, South Africa

Jaap Stam would be an ideal signing for Newcastle United. He's a very commanding centre half who would provide a much-needed leader at the back for Sir Bobby Robson.
Peter, England

I hope Middlesbrough can get Francis Jeffers or someone of a similar calibre

Chris, UK

I would love to see Birmingham sign Mark Viduka, available now for 3m, plus Van Hooijdonk for 1m.
Lee, UK

As a Gooner, I am looking forward to seeing Rustu or maybe Paul Robinson coming through the entrance at Highbury. Also, I feel that we should offload Kanu. In place, we should have Trezeguet. Just imagine Henry and Trezeguet! Trezeguet is the perfect target man.
Kai, UK

As a Wolves fan I would like to see a couple of strikers come in, maybe Ricketts for 2.5m and Huckerby - he's rotting in the Man City reserves at the moment. Also Peter Reid to replace Jones!
Dale , England

I hope Middlesbrough can get Francis Jeffers or someone of a similar calibre. I would also like to see us sign Danny Mills. Come to Boro please!
Chris, UK

We Sunderland fans should begin preparing for the post-Kevin Phillips era. The money we would get from selling him, plus McAteer, Schwarz, Varga, Kyle, Thirlwell and Michael Gray (if we could find takers for them) would not only ease our financial problems, but also give us a little cash to bring in the likes of Malcolm Christie.

Why not also take advantage of the crisis at Upton Park and make moves for Carrick or Sinclair? Both would be great assets.

Lee Bowyer or Nicky Butt to partner Barry Ferguson and take Rangers to the league title

Billy, UK

Further afield, how about Exteberria at Athletico Bilbao? He's a quality right-winger. An injection of pace and creativity along with the return of the reliable Reyna may just save us. If not, it's important to build a young, talented team to ensure our immediate return to the top flight.
Chris Harris, Gateshead

As a Liverpool fan I would like to see Houllier buy Bernd Schneider from Bayer Leverkusen because he was awseome for them last year and he would solve our lack of width problem. Maybe also Makelele from Real Madrid to give us some more creativity; or Valeron from Deportivo.
Nick, England

As a Real Madrid fan, Figo is not going anywhere, and anyway, he says that he wants to finish his career in Italy when his contract runs out, when he is 33.

The only players that I would buy would be Phillipe Mexes from Auxerre as a replacement for Hierro and Van Bommel from PSV to partner Makelele in midfield.
Gary, Spain

Lee Bowyer or Nicky Butt to partner Barry Ferguson and take Rangers to the league title.
Billy, UK

There is a desperate need of change at Anfield. I would love to see Houllier get rid of Heskey and Dudek, and bring in a couple of strong midfielders. We need some creativity and players such as Figo, Kewell and Totti can all do the job.
Chauvo, Mexico

As an Arsenal fan I think it is brilliant that Arsene Wenger is hoping to sign the Turkish goalkeeper Rustu. I thought Rustu was brilliant in the World Cup.
Lauren , England

Paul Jones of Southampton would be a good if not great signing

Mikey T, England

Hmm, Bowyer for Newcastle? I don't like the sound of that to be honest. I'd prefer Stam or Materazzi but Stam doesn't want to leave for England and Materazzi is out of Robson and Shepherd's price range. There's also this Dawson fella from Forest, but that's just another Titus Bramble I fear.
Gary Hall, England

I would like WBA to get Malcolm Christie from Derby, I think he is a proven Premiership goalscorer and at his best can torment any Premiership defender. A striker is what WBA lack most of all and it is vital we can get one that will help keep us up.
Tom Goffe, England

As Arsenal only need a short-term signing and are probably reluctant to spend big money I feel Paul Jones of Southampton would be a good if not great signing. He is desperate to leave and a proven reliable international.
Mikey T, England

It would be just perfect if the Mancunians could sign Shevchenko from Milan, Ronaldinho from PSG, Rosicky from Dortmund, Basturk from Leverkusen and Trezeguet from Juventus. Although these are my favourites, I would be happy with just Basturk and Shevchenko.

Trezeguet is a superb player, but would suit Arsenal way better where he could team up with his buddy Henry. And for Rosicky I was thinking Leeds.
Maick Werner, The Netherlands

Newcastle would be crazy to sign Lee Bowyer

Jamal Al-Ani, UK

As an Arsenal fan, I would like to see another world class striker to partner Thierry Henry and who better than his international team-mate David Trezeguet? It would be a nightmare for the Premiership defenders.
Kofi Asare, Canada

At Arsenal we are only three players away from winning the title again. We need a good goalkeeper someone like Friedel of Blackburn to back up Seaman or even be first choice.

We need a good defender to play alongside Campbell, someone who can read the game well like Taylor of Blackburn or Ferdinand of Man Utd as Keown may soon retire and Cygan hasn't lived up to his status. We need a good midfielder as well on the right as Ljunberg and Wiltord have lost their touch and need replacing.
Trevino, England

As a West Brom fan I would love to see Zidane come to the Hawthorns but that won't happen so perhaps Figo at a knockdown 10 million?
Mark, England

Newcastle would be crazy to sign Lee Bowyer, he comes with too much extra baggage and a bad record, I think he would be a liability to any club he joins.
Jamal Al-Ani, UK

Hidetoshi Nakata for Chelsea!

Tadahiro Ishiwata, Japan

As a proud Everton fan, I'm pleased to say that I don't think we need to bring in very many more players. In fact, I believe that the squad we have at the moment (with a little bit of tinkering here and there) will be able to last us for the next few seasons.

David Moyes is very good at bringing teams together and turning good players into great players. However, every football fan wants to see a couple of new faces. Ibrahim Said, who is already virtually signed, could form a strong central defensive partnership with Yobo.
Andrew, England

Everton need a target man to replace the always injured big Dunc - Carsten Jancker has been rumoured but I'd like to see us sign Carlton Cole who could partner Wayne Rooney for a decade.
Blair Johnson, New Zealand

As a Leeds fan I would love to see the back of Lee Bowyer, Olivier Dacourt and Mark Viduka. They lack effort and willingness to play in the white shirt and deserve to be thrown out. The club is now showing signs of playing again, if slightly, and it can't be a surprise to anyone that the three above have had no, or very little, part in that.
Tony, England

Hidetoshi Nakata for Chelsea! Nakata will be a good partner with Zola and add some more attacking ability to the team. Chelsea need someone reliable in midfield, and Nakata is the man.
Tadahiro Ishiwata, Japan

I'd like to see Ronaldo come to Everton

Phil, Bromborough

Kevin Phillips has a lot to offer - not just goals and in a United Shirt he would score a hatful!!!!!!
Sean, England

I would love to see Harry Kewell come to Liverpool as he is playing super stuff at Leeds at the moment and he could be the player we are missing in midfield. We need width.
Gareth MacCauley, Dublin, Ireland

United need a striker, Ronaldinho or Shevchenko would be brilliant but I think they should sign Diego Tristran. Why? Because he has a 10m buy out clause in his contract. He would be a brilliant partner for van Nistelrooy. Also, I would love to see a swap deal, Vieira for Keane, and maybe a bit of cash.
Tim Marshall, USA

I'd like to see Ronaldo come to Everton. The only problem being that he might not be keen because he'd struggle to get a game with Rooney there.
Phil, Bromborough

Ronaldinho, Raul or out-of-favour Morientes for Manchester United. Peter Kenyon has said that the club won't be rushed into sales during January but a class buy would help our Premiership resolve and I think one of these three would do a great job in ensuring that to the end of the season at least.
Max Bosling, UK

I wouldn't be too sad to see Lee Bowyer go

Phil, Hereford, England

Man Utd must buy Cisse from Auxerre. What a player he is: young, fast, strong and extremely good.
Richard Brindley, England

In the wake of Wenger's comments about a new keeper, I would love to see Francesco Toldo join the club. Carlo Cudicini would be my personal favourite but this is the Premiership and not championship manager so that isn't going to happen!
Alan McNamara, Ireland

Man Utd need a left footed player and a defender who isn't scared of Roy Keane
Laura, UK

I would love to see another top-class midfielder at Liverpool, or somebody who could assist Michael Owen properly as Milan Baros' style is different, probably Marc Overmars
Colton Richards, England

As a Leeds fan, I would love to see Kleberson come to Leeds. I would also be pleased if our better players, Kewell, Fowler and Smith stayed at Elland Road.

I wouldn't be too sad to see Lee Bowyer go either. Also a good central defender to partner Woodgate. Someone like Alpay. He is out of favour at Villa, so that's a possibility.
Phil, Hereford, England

As a Liverpool fan I would love to see Marc Overmars join. He's got pace, can score goals

Karl, England
Everyone talks about the lack of width at Liverpool so what about these three: Marc Overmars who has said previously he admires the club. Damien Duff at a reasonable price now the World Cup is long forgotten and Steve McManaman who wouldn't cost a lot and can play on both wings.
SC, UK

Man United need an out and out goal scorer brought in next month. Somebody that can score every week for us and steer us to the top of the Premiership.

Someone like Ronaldinho, who would be loved by the fans at Old Trafford, or even David Trezeguet. Sir Alex needs someone to partner Ruud up front. Forlan is great but not the best. Sir Alex, bring in a striker for the New Year!
Gary, England

As a Liverpool fan I would love to see Marc Overmars join. He's got pace, can score goals, and plays on the left the answer to our problem. Another player who has been linked to us is Harry Kewell. That could turn out to be a very good buy for us if we don't get Overmars.
Karl, England

I would love to see Yildary Basturk (Leverkusen) join Arsenal to strengthen them. Because of injuries and other things they aren't competing like last season.

And I would like to see Czech midfielder Thomas Rosicky go to Manchester United. He would be a great partner in crime with Keane.
Joe, Zimbabwe

Shevchenko at Manchester United! There's no doubt that United will win the championship if he is signed. The only problem is that he's ineligible for the Champions League. Plus Ronaldo for Aberystwyth Town!
Guto, Wales

I would love to see a real top class striker at the Stadium of Light. Phillips heart is obviously not with Sunderland, and we desperately need a player that wants to play for us. Maybe Fowler would fancy a trip up North?
Jimbo, England

I would love to see Lee Bowyer come to Man City. He has been linked with Maine Road a few times and I think Keegan could bring the best out of him.

He is the type of player who can make a real difference to a game, and I think we could acheive a top ten finish with him in the side.
Simon, UK
