| Sunday, 17 November, 2002, 19:46 GMT Should Libya buy Lazio? ![]() Libya are considering buying the controlling share in Italian giants Lazio. Would such a deal be beneficial to both club and country? The son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has confirmed the country is considering buying the 35% controlling share in Lazio put up for sale by bosses of the club's troubled parent company Cirio. Lazio would certainly see their current precarious situation eased by such a move - Cirio racked up losses of 83.9m euros in the last nine months and the club owe Manchester United 12m from the transfer of Jaap Stam. And the deal would certainly continue to raise Libya's footballing profile, already on the up following the moves of Patrick Mboma and Victor Ikpeba to the country. But with Italian football currently in great financial strife, is the bid the best use of the country's assets? And how will Lazio fans react to the news? This debate is now closed - a selection of your emails appears below. It would be a great relief for Sergio Cragnotti and the Lazio faithful, who have watched the scenerio of the club's financial mess with disgust.
I think the only problem that the side encounters apart from their other Serie A rivals has to do with finance but thanks to Libya and Africa, the sun will smile on the side again. Lazio is one of the biggest names in Italian and European soccer. They are showing great character in Both Serie A and the Uefa Cup, despite their financial problems. Gaddafi would buy them better players and as a result they could win Serie A for the first time since 1999/2000. It would give him a place in the hearts of Lazio supporters for keeping the club that first brought football to Rome in good health. I think it is a wonderful idea for an Arab from Africa to buy Lazio a club that has a reputation for having some hard core right-wing racist fans. They should get a good taste of diversity, something we cherish alot in USA. Perhaps now the regime in Libya is trying to become more intergrated with the world community. I think it can only bring benefits to both Libya and the rest of the world. I think Libya buying Lazio is a great idea. Quite how Gaddafi will cope with Chelsea supremo Ken Bates if he was invest in them is another matter. | Top Sports Talk stories now: Links to more Sports Talk stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
