| Monday, 11 November, 2002, 12:01 GMT 2010: How should Africa bid? ![]() After the disappointment of losing the 2006 World Cup to Germany, South Africa are bidding for the 2010 World Cup. But Egypt have declared their intention to compete with the South Africans for football's most prestigious event. Should the African continent decide on one bid? This debate is now closed. Following the controversy that followed the bidding process for the 2006 World Cup, Fifa declared that Africa would have the sole right to host the 2010 event. But how should the choice be made? Should it be a free-for-all, with any African country able to enter the race and compete freely against the others? Or should Caf manage the situation and present a more united front? Any African country interested in the competition should bid. Personally, I think Africa, Egypt and Morocco have the best chance. Whichever country wins the honour should have the support of the entire continent. Nigeria should be the host nation, due to their hard work and really high standard of football. I think Eritrea should co-host the World Cup with Ethiopia.Considering the fact that they are war torn african countries, Fifa should give them the opportunity to host the competition as this would bring them needed cash. To be honest with everybody, there is no competition. South Africa is an obvious choice. And for those whining and complaining about security in South Africa, please stop it. There are so many things good about South Africa. The only country that can host the World Cup is South Africa. Face it African brothers, they have the means and if you guys are complaining about the security there, it would only be worse elsewhere. Face it guys, RSA Is the country to represent Africa! Until Africa can at least guarantee protection of the crowds, from either Islamic terrorists in Morocco and Egypt or unsafe grounds/policing in the rest of the continent,
Kye, England South Africa may be fighting crime, but that's 100 times better than terrorism. I'm really afraid of what could be the outcome of an attack during a competition. Egyptians may be safe in Egypt but not foreigners; especially westerners who can constitute a large number of spectators. Egypt should review its decision and give Morocco the chance to compete with South Africa.I strongly believe Egypt will just split votes. Let's use the process of elimination to choose the host for 2010. Oil countries = corruption; Southern countries = crime; Northern countries = terrorism. The greatest show on earth is coming to our roots. I believe that any country that can come up with 10 stadiums of 50,000 plus capacity and can prove that they will not be any security problems should be awarded the tournament. Good luck to all and see you in eight years. The time has come for Africa to host and win the World Cup. South Africa has more than it takes to make an excellent host. They have proved a point with rugby, athletics etc. I know for sure that given the chance, the world will forever remember the rich African culture on display. No African country qualifies to host a World Cup at this time. The majority of South Africans are very poor and a liability. They will only support Bafana Bafana and other games will struggle to have fans. Security in South Africa is horrible. All the good stadiums are customed for rugby. The soccer authorities only have one stadium, the FNB, which is half-completed. The general skills of South Africans like the rest of Africa are still inefficient. As for other countries they will offer a third world World Cup. It's time we Africans strive for perfection and advancement. The truth is we are still uncivilized and backward compared to others. BR> Plato, South Africa I strongly believe Nigeria or South Africa can host it well, with Nigeria having the more experience. Nigeria succesfully hosted the U20 Championship in '99 and co-hosted the
Abiola, USA Morocco should host this event. They were in the race for 1994, when it was given to the USA. They placed their bid again for the 1998 and 2006 World Cups, but have never won. Since this event is coming to Africa for the first time, I believe this is the chance for Morocco. It will be good compensation after being turned down several times. Besides, they have the infrastructure to host such a big event. The security there is also good. So Fifa, please let the World Cup go to Morocco this time. Our song should be, "It is Africa's turn to host the world." Whether it is Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt or Morocco, It is the black continent's turn to mesmerize the world. I would love to see Nigeria host it, as it will be a tremendous boost for us. We have the stadia and Nigerians are extremely friendly to foreigners. But since I do not see us having the facilities needed for a good World Cup in eight years time, my vote goes to Egypt. There is nothing to prove that if an African country bids and wins, the 2010 World Cup will be the pride of Africa. We do not need special favours from Fifa. What we want is fairness. On a level playing ground, Africa is capable of hosting the World Cup. South Africa fits the bill and not for sentimental reasons. Caf should put its house in order and back one candidate unlike they did for 2006. They should inspect the facilities and make a recommendation. Countries witnessing political crisis at the moment are not advised to bid but stable nations should be encourage to put their names forward. Multiple bids will force African countries to improve their infrastructure. I think South Africa and Egypt stand a very good chance. Nigeria should forget it. Egypt or Morocco should be the favoured ones and as for South Africa, they may have the infrastructure but they come up short on security. Its a golden chance for Africa to get its own share of football glory, so all Africans must support the best countries capable of bidding. I think there only three are capable, which are Egypt, South Africa and Morocco. I think South Africa is the right country to host the 2010 World Cup, because of its good television network and regular electricity supply. Fifa, if Nigeria is in your mind think again. Apart from the corrupt nature of Nigerian officials, the infrastructure is not there and may never be. All Africans should be proud that so many African countries are willing to take on the task of hosting this prestigious event. Let's all support each other, and no matter who wins the bid to host, it will be a victory for all Africans. Nigerians really need to come to grips with reality. The country has neither the stadia nor the infrastructure required to host an event of such magnitude. And there is no chance that all this can be put in place prior to the decision day.
Willie Chopa, Kenya Nigeria should hold the cup, because of the football prowess the country has shown. The super Eagles will swoop down, pick the world apart and bring the cup home. Vote for Nigeria. We all need to support any country that has the potential and the will to do the job. The only country that fits these criteria is South Africa. Please support South Africa because all of Africa will benefit. Egypt and South Africa are the only two countries that have the potential to host the World Cup, with
