| Thursday, 31 October, 2002, 11:47 GMT Was Yorath right to walk? ![]() Terry Yorath has resigned as manager of Sheffield Wednesday following a poor start to the season. Where now for the Owls? Yorath managed to keep the Owls in Division One by a single point last season and was rewarded with a two-year contract. And despite poor results he had insisted he would carry on in charge at Hillsborough after Wednesday's 1-0 home defeat by Millwall. But the pressure on him intensified as the side continued to struggle and the fans again called for his sacking. Who should take over the struggling side? This debate is now closed. A selection of your e-mails appear below. Forget Ronnie Moore, remember what happened when we "lured" Danny Wilson? Whoever we get will have the same problem Terry did...getting the strikers to score! No manager can survive if his seasoned forwards consistently miss sitters, as Donelly did on Wednesday. I feel that the comments Terry made about forwards getting managers the sack was very true. Thanks for trying Terry, but whoever replaces you will have the same problems no matter how much of a miracle worker he may seem to be.
Yorath has never been a top manager and for Wednesday to appoint him in the first place was a great mistake. Fair enough he kept us in the First Division last season, but is that all we can hope for? Having been a life-long Sheffield Wednesday fan I honestly say that the board at the club is the main reason behind our decline in the last five or six years. The only way we will get back into the Premiership, where we belong, is with a new board who will give the new manager, who should be George Burley, money. And Terry Yorath is definitely not the reason why we are third from bottom of the First Division. Dave Richards got us into this mess and this current bunch of players have seen off four managers. Don't blame Yorath, he cleared a lot of rubbish out (remember De Bilde), the playing staff are not up to it. Leave Ronnie Moore alone to work his magic at Millmoor, go for a manager used to a big club. Peter Reid is the obvious choice. The decline of the Wednesday over the last 10 years is nasty pill to swallow. We were a top cup specialist, had a run in Europe and finishing in what would be a Champions League position these days.
Ultimately the board has to take responsibility for not capitalising on the success, like Chelsea, Leeds, Newcastle and Aston Villa have, to name a few. The board dealt with the club as if it was a football club and not a business, which ultimately has caused the downfall of a potentially massive club. Yorath's not so surprising departure has made sure of only one thing - it's the core of the club that is rotten. The board needs replacing, full stop. I feel sorry for Yorath. It was mission impossible for the 'Man with the Golden Mullet'. No money to bring in new players, but under pressure to get rid of our better ones! It's a tough old life for managers. Here's to another season of disappointment and crushed dreams. Why do Wednesday fans clutch at straws? Firstly, expecting ex-players to be miracle workers - Chris Waddle? Yeah, he's really proved himself as a manager at Worksop!? Secondly, why on earth would the Blades want a merger? They are having a great season - and should have beaten the Owls (as we did!). Finally, Ronnie Moore is born to be a Miller - that means his biggest rivals are Wednesday! We all saw how delighted he was to win at Hillsborough 2-1 in the last minute(twice!!). So looks like its Peter Reid....GOOD LUCK!?!?!? I think pressure is put on managers too early in the season. Terry had a year in the job and no one goes down in October.
Yorath never had the class to turn things round at Hillsborough. We've had a run of gormless managers since Trevor Francis went. Not one has used our assets wisely. To think of the players we sold: Carbone, Di Canio, Thome. I think I blame Danny Wilson most of all. He just couldn't cope at such a big club. It was a mistake to appoint him for sentimental reasons. The slide just got worse from there. Surely things can't get even worse...can they? It's a disaster that Yorath has gone. Us Blades fans were banking on him to take W*dnesday down to Division Two, their rightful home. Still, I'm sure that the next inadequate to take over at Swillsborough will finish the job, hopefully taking them into bankruptcy on the way. Apparently, Brian Little has been in discussions with the board and he is in line to take over! But we need someone who can grind out results and keep us up with the young players we have! Is George Graham available? Whoever the manager - get rid of Danny Maddix! He did the good honest thing: walked before he was pushed.
Wednesday need to attract the right calibre of manager for the size of the club. I would have thought Carlton Palmer is the obvious choice - he will get the respect of players (at least on a night out), and he is used to working with a bigger budget for players at Stockport. Besides, if Wednesday managed to poach him, you would be doing my club a big favour (Stockport County)! Yorath should never have been given a contract this summer to start with. We avoided relegation by one point last season & that was in a year where there were some truly dire teams in the league. Well done to Terry though for jumping before he was pushed & saving us some valuable compensation. Hopefully we'll be able to attract Peter Reid, with Waddle and Pearson as coaches. How many more managers will Wednesday get through? At the end of the day the players they have are poor and with a 20 million debt the future bleak. I think they should have made Chris Waddle player manager years ago: maybe now they will go back to the best ever Wednesday player who will command respect from both players and fans? With some of the players that Yorath had at Wednesday, why are we so low down in the division? Something was not quite right! Let's get Reid and Waddle in to sort out this mess!
Terry Yorath has managed to get Wednesday playing some of the best football that I have seen them play in years. Most of the bad results have been down to bad luck more than a lack of skill, but it's down to the players just as much as the manager. How is it that Gerald Sibon can be so inconsistent? One week he plays like a soldier of fortune, the next he's from the legion of doom! We need to get in a manager that can get the most out of the players without spending the money. We have to make the most out of the opportunities that we are creating, and perhaps Reid's approach to managing would be exactly what the club needs. Terry Yorath did a mediocre job with a worse than mediocre team. The players seem uncommitted; the youth team has been in free fall since the days of Howard Wilkinson. It pains me to say we need to take a long look across Sheffield and look why we can't bring young players (with talent) through into our first team. Peter Reid would be a good choice if fully backed by the board, I don't think Chris Waddle has the experience, he was the coach the season Wednesday last got relegated. Terry Yorath is a really nice guy. He never blames anyone, only himself and that must make him unique in football management. But in reality Terry is too nice a guy. All his players respect him but few are playing for him. Yorath was a gentleman throughout but results speak for themselves and he had to go sooner rather than later. Whoever has the job must live with the lack of funds and the very limited lack of quality in the squad. That said, many teams (Ipswich, Barnsley, Norwich, Bolton) have performed very well with limited resources in recent years. What the Owls now need is a manager who can get the best out of the lads we have and hopefully bring back the flowing passing game we're used to at S6. Managers who have failed dramatically on big or small budgets elsewhere need not apply! This is a disgraceful decision by Terry. He had a contract and should have remained loyal to it. Where does that leave the club now? Probably better off I'd say. That's the problem. Don't try to contact Neil Warnock! I see not one of your readers have succeeded in supplying a solution to the situation SWFC find themselves in!! With a population of over 500, 000 and a combined support of both clubs of no more than 50,000 isn't it time the people of Sheffield lifted their heads out of the sand & thought laterally about this problem!!
Peter Reid, Chris Waddle, Bryan Robson would do well - but after the initial flourish they would encounter the same problems as Shreeves, Jewell, Wilson & Yorath - CASH!! The sooner we look at ground sharing at the very least and start to cut costs and fill a stadium as opposed to the 50% yield that Wednesday currently get the quicker we can build a base to challenge the likes of Rotherham & Millwall........ I think the sad truth of the matter is that unless we get a miracle worker, Sheffield Wednesday are going nowhere fast. The financial situation has to be sorted out before any manager can rebuild a side that is presently composed of mediocre young lads and a few second-rate journeymen. I'm sorry to see Terry go. He was one of the most genuine people I've ever met in football, and tried his hardest to bridge the gap between the club and the supporters. The way he made the travelling supporters welcome on the pre-season tour of Sweden convinced me that there were some very good things to come from this man. Unfortunately, he's just turned out to be the latest in a long line of managers who have been let down by the club's board. Thanks for everything you tried to do Terry, we'll miss you. Yorath had to go. The performances this season have been good but the team has no confidence. This must come down to the manager. Are we too late to get George Burley?
I don't think Yorath can shoulder so much of the blame for Wednesday struggling. The financial situation at the club would have tested better managers than him. Yorath has done a very honourable thing in resigning. He had to go - after two wins in 19 games - and by resigning he's saved the club the cost of sacking him. His replacement needs to be experienced, and Peter Reid is the obvious candidate, assuming he'd take it. If not, I just hope the board don't repeat past mistakes by appointing novices like Wilson and Jewell or has-beens like Shreeves and Yorath. Even Bryan Robson would be better! It's a shame to see a manager with Terry Yorath's talent leave the Owls. Having said that, I am a Sheffield United fan! As a loyal Sheffield Wednesday fan I have a lot of respect for Terry Yorath, his hands were tied with finances and he has a lot of players who simply won't perform week in, week out. I don't believe he has made a bad signing either and always came across as a gentile, tactile manager. I think his position was made untenable though by last night's defeat and he has done the honourable thing and stepped down.
As a fan I would love to see Chris Turner be made first team coach, he was born in Sheffield and is a Wednesday fan and has taken Hartlepool to the top of the third division, it would also be great to see Chris Waddle brought in as first team coach as he would jump at getting back to Sheffield Wednesday and all the players would respect these men as they have done it all as players. Here's hoping the Owls can sort the situation out once and for all because, believe or not there is some talent in that squad for the right people to harness. Sheffield Wednesday should stick out their neck to attract the big name manager. Peter Reid would get my vote; get some passion from the players. It's not a great shock to see Terry Yorath leave Wednesday given the poor results, not only this season but last season as well! It's the same old story of not having any money to spend on new players and having to make do with the mediocre squad now at Hillsborough (e.g. Shefki Kuqi, worth 1m? - I don't think so!!). Unfortunately for the Owls they are nowhere near the team they used to be, and have looked more like relegation candidates than ever returning to the top flight. They will probably have their sights on another big name manager, perhaps Reid or Robson - but who would want the job with no cash to spend, with the club lying in a relegation place. Rumour has it they have been trying to line up Ronnie Moore - but he is not that daft, he knows that Rotherham are now a better team that Wednesday!
Terry did the best he could, he kept us in Division One last year but again another poor start and yet another tough season. It's time for a youthful management team. Chris Turner and Chris Waddle are both ideal for the club. I like Yorath as a man, but he was the wrong man when he was awarded the two year contract. The board took a cheap option, and arrogantly (Hulley) defended it at the time, but everybody I spoke to felt it was the wrong decision. The board has a lot to answer for and now really have to somehow appoint a big name who can command some respect from our under-achieving players. I think the Wednesday chairman overestimates the size and potential of his club. 20M in debt plus a squad lacking any stars and made up of lower league and youth players. Does he expect miracles from these managers??? In my opinion the best option would be to merge United and Wednesday to form a 'super club' giving larger crowds and much needed money from the sale of Bramall Lane and surplus squad members. I could never see it happening though. Yorath was right to quit as I don't think he could motivate the players. We need a good old fashioned manager, someone who will kick players for not performing: Peter Reid, Jim Smith, Dave Bassett.... |
