| Saturday, 21 September, 2002, 18:42 GMT 19:42 UK Salute Valentino Rossi ![]() Valentino Rossi claims the first MotoGP World Championship after winning the Brazilian Grand Prix. Congratulate motorcycling's world champion. At just 23 years of age, Italian Rossi is fast cementing his place in the motorcycling hall of fame. In order to win the title, Rossi had to score 11 points more than team-mate Tohru Ukawa, who crashed out after two laps. And despite slippery conditions, he beat Max Biaggi to claim the Brazilian Grand Prix - his 10th win in 12 races this season. He adds the world title to a collection which includes last year's 500cc world crown, and the 250cc title in 1999. Send your tributes to Rossi's achievement. This debate is now closed Another inspired race win, culminating in a well deserved second World Championship. Well done, long may the Doctor reign supreme! This is my first season watching MotoGP, it's the most exciting sport on TV and it's down to one man - Valentino Rossi. I just hope that soon it gets more TV and press coverage in Britain, as it is on another level compared to Formula 1. Both sports have one person dominating, but it comes down to the amount of overtaking and how close the bikes get - its pure entertainment. Watching the last two races in Portugal and Brazil, I admire them for getting up to those speeds in the wet on motorbikes.
I went to Donnington to watch the British round in July, and you can't imagine how fast these riders go until you see it with your own eyes. And at 30 for race day, it is much better value for money than Formula 1 or even football. The government should also be doing more to encourage the use of motorbikes in this country, as I believe it is our answer to traffic congestion and pollution. So come, on let's have more TV coverage and press on the magnificent sport and the Doctor Valentino Rossi. Valentino - you're one in a million! I watched every race, cheering you on. Come on BBC, give these guys the coverage they deserve - both WSB and MotoGP riders are magnificent! Valentino Rossi, extraordinary talent but unfortunately not recognised by the British press or the BBC for that matter- they are more likely to champion the over weight participants of the Golfing world (is this really a sport for g** sake???) then pay tribute to a genuine talent- last weekend's BBC coverage- i rest my case... Congratulations! Valentino! Not only is he a pretty good motorcycle rider, but he also picked the best country in the world to live in. England, of course!! Well done Valentino, you have done it with real style this year.
Parabns Valentino! Estive no autodromo assistindo sua vitoria! Com cabea voce soube esperar a hora certa de passar Roberts. Parabns! Well done Valentino. He is a fantastic rider and has a great personality. I am always disappointed when we don't see any coverage in the British press. Valentino has just become word champion and not even a mention in today's papers. Looking forward to next year and seeing Valentino's smiling face. Please go into F1 and bring some excitment back. CONGRATS on a second World Championship! This is the mark of a TRUE Champion. Anyone can become champ...a TRUE champion can do it again and again! To be the best you've got to beat the best. Only Valentino Rossi can stop Valentino Rossi! Keep it goin' strong!!! Fantastic!!! Maybe cars next, because someone needs to give Schumacher some competition!! The first MotoGP winner, and all-round nice guy. What a talent! Maybe this will convince fans of F1 that there are other motorsports, where overtaking is done on-track rather than in the pits! Nice one, Vale. You always seem to win with style. Just try and put on a show in the last race, though, because I'm supposed to be going!
Right now, two wheeled motorsport is going through a golden patch, with just about the most exciting sports TV you can get. Rossi is a massively dominant, charismatic entertainer, and with stars appearing in morotcycling of the calibre of him, Ricky Carmichael and James Stewart in Motorcross, the Bayliss/Edwards duel in World Superbikes and more teams joining MotoGP next year, it looks like Formula One will have to radically overhaul itself to compete for excitement. Congratulations Valentino! You are a true star and a worthy champion. Your determination is an inspiration and you're great fun to watch. Keep that cheeky smile on your face! Well done Valentino...but enjoy it now 'cause the Bayliss and his Ducati are coming to get you next year...! Quite simply, Valentino Rossi is the reason why so many people have been drawn to MotoGP. It is an absolute disgrace that this sport does does not receive the coverage it deserves. Motorcycle racing has none of cynicism associated with F1 and has a champion who is a genuine personality. Well done Valentino and we all look forward to next year! Young and gifted - what a true champion he is! He can only go on to better and brighter things! The talent of a Schumacher and the personality of a Beckham makes a champion who will dominate his sport for years to come! I have never fancied moto/car racing previously, and the reason I have to write this is due to the personality of one man - Valentino Rossi. I have been a convert of MotoGP since Rossi won the 250 race. Great show, extreme skill complemented by an enduring machine - Rossi and Honda. Now I'll try get on a bike.
Jonathan Jones, UK Congratulations Valentino and thanks for yet another brilliant season. In a world where mediocrity rules, you are truly a champion of the people. Keep going mate, keep doing what you do best - racing to win and enjoying it at the same time. If you get bored, have a crack at the Isle of Man TT. I'm sure you'd win that too. All the best. Look forward to seeing you next year. A legend in the making. See you at the Island in a couple of weeks. Rossi is not a star - he's a superstar. Well done. What a shame he doesn't get the coverage on national TV. There was not even a mention on the sports news on Saturday on BBC or ITV. Great attitude, always smiling and now with a lot more composure. You will win more championship in the future. Congrats!! He is kind of like the Tiger Woods of MotoGP, reminds me of Mickey Doohan a few years back. Doesn't make for great competition, but it certainly makes for great sport stories. A legend in the making and a very worthy champion. Ride on Rossi!
Congratulations and thanks for continue to win by providing a generous display of skills. I hope that you will continue to win with that supreme figthing edge so characteristic to a champion, and that you will never have to become a champion by being a regular second/third. It is a blessing in disguise for you, the sport and Honda to have to face such strong competitors. Valentino! Congratulations! You are the best. Because of you, I started to watch MotoGP! I love your sense of humour, your smile puts one on my face! Keep going. Not a keen motorcycling follower, but watching the young Rossi on TV, I saw a man that was just the best on the day. I think he had just one person to beat in winning the title on the day...himself. He will go places if he continues with the form he displayed in Brazil. A true champion who enjoys his racing as much as he ever has done. It's such a crying shame that motorcycle sport in the UK doesn't get the coverage it deserves.
The BBC still insist on pandering to the lowerst common denominatior by giving blanket coverage to football/cricket/tennis. True SBK coverage has improved, no doubt due to Suzy Perry's influence, but come on, let's get more live coverage of BSB. The best national championship in the world gets edited highighlights a week later, when it can be fitted in between Valentino Rossi epitomises all the qualities of a world champion. He is highly skilled, courageous, and has an incisive tactical racing mind. Above all, he has a natural instinct to win with honour, and without detriment to his fellow racers. Notwithstanding his impressive career record, Rossi is a champion, deeply passionate about his sport, having a natural ability to connect with motor cycling enthusiasts around the world. And how rare to see a person at the very top of his sport who is so clearly having a great time! Congratulations Valentino, you are a worthy champion!
The greatest of all the time, he fills us with great pride. He makes me proud to be Italian, and most of all to be from the same town. Grazie Vale, hope to see you again in Sepang. Not since Agostini have I seen such skill. Congratulations! Unfortunately, in Ireland MotoGP is not so popular and it is always a struggle to find a pub to watch you win. But every time is just like being there with you! Thank you, on behalf of many Italians in Ireland and enjoy your World Championship title! Well done old boy! Rossi seems to be peerless at the moment, and I just wish Yamaha, Suzuki and Aprilia would catch up with Honda. Put Roberts on equal machinery and Valentino will at least have to work for his money. The championship will be a lot closer next year - I can hardly wait to see some racing again! How can one man have so much talent? He is in a class of his own and proved it this year - a fantastic achievement by a great guy. Also, well done to JB for a great job - again! Well done to him. However it will be very interesting next year to see how well he does when riders like Biaggi and Katoh are on the same machinery. He's a great rider worthy of more press attention. His achievement so far is worthy of greater recognition, and his personality has captured a wide range of admiration, adulation and imagination. A fantastic champion and a wonderful guy. Magnificent! An undisputed and very worthy champion, with a personality to endear him to all nationalities. | See also: 21 Sep 02 | Motorbikes Top Sports Talk stories now: Links to more Sports Talk stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
