| Tuesday, 10 September, 2002, 11:16 GMT 12:16 UK Who would you stick on a stamp? ![]() Sunderland's record signing Tore Andre Flo is to be honoured by appearing on a postage stamp in his native Norway. Who would you like to see immortalised on paper? Flo's goal in his country's 2-1 World Cup victory over Brazil in 1998 has been chosen as his home nation's favourite footballing memory and will now feature on a stamp. No doubt a similar poll in the UK would feature the likes of Beckham and Co following England's 5-1 mauling of Germany, but what about the unsung heroes of British sport? Paula Radcliffe's golden Commonwealth and European double wins recently topped Radio Five Live's vote for best sporting moment of the summer. And Tony McCoy's antics this summer mean he is in the running for Sports Personality of the Year. Which sporting star would you nominate to be on a stamp? This debate is now closed The idea of replacing Her Majesty's image with one of a sportsman is absurd. For me it would have to be my hero, Roy Keane, for the Irish stamp. I just hope some day we will see him back in a green shirt leading the team out onto the field. Best football player that will ever play for Ireland. Mike Tyson: then I could lick 'im. I'd like to see the Middlesbrough player Phil Stamp on a stamp, then we could have a Stamp stamp. Also, what about a collecters set of Vieira, Wise and Keane, surely three of the greatest stampers in the game.
How about Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski...Let's face it, it's the closest they'll ever get to being first class! Bertie Vogts - He's used to getting well licked! Mark Hughes, for actually giving the Welsh public hope. Gerald Sibon should be a stamp for being the best player in the English First Division. Without a doubt Lennox Lewis should be on a stamp. He has succeeded in the hardest of sports. He is the world Heavyweight boxing champion and a proud ambassador for England. Besides that it will be the only chance anyone will get of giving him a 'licking'... UK stamps can only feature people who have died apart from the Queen. Greats such as Jim Clark or Graham Hill would be appropriate. A set of stamps featuring football greats was brought out to celebrate Euro 1996. I would put the moment that Bobby Moore & Pele swapped shirts at the 1970 World Cup, a truly magnificent gesture by both men.
Here are a few British legends that deserve to be commemorated: The 1966 England football team, Carl Fogarty, Colin Jackson, Billy Boston Jonathan Edwards, Mary Peters, Eric Bristow, and Ian Botham. It's gotta be Malta's own captain, David Carabott. He is king amongst men!!! Jock Stein and Bill Shankly both deserve the accolade simply for being the best managers around. And one of Chris Waddle with that look on his face after he skied his penalty in Italia '90. I'd like to see the face of Darius Vassell's on a stamp. The boy has come of age and deserves recognition for his past year performances for both club and country. He's only earning 5k a week at Villa which is disgraceful compared with some of the earnings in the current game. His face on a stamp might just prove to Villa that his signature on a new contract is priority, before one of the "big clubs" nick him off us.... no doubt for a bargain price!!
Steve Redgrave, Daley Thompson, Bobby Moore and Ian Botham should all be honoured, as they are all greats! Berti Vogts should also be honoured as I think he's done a tremendous job, and Scotland's goalkeeper could appear in his usual pose - picking the ball out of the net. The Welsh Deaf Rugby Team gets my vote. They won the Deaf World Cup and deaf rugby needs a lot of support, and having a stamp commemorating their achievement would bolster the amount of interest. I would put Carl Fogarty on a stamp. He was World Champ four years out of five, yet is hardly mentioned in media. Do we not like world champs, or only losers at more popular sports? I think that Pat Bonner should be put on a stamp for his tireless efforts with Ireland and Celtic over the years - and of course his penalty save against Romania at Italia '90! Man Utd's 1968 European Cup winning team for proving that English teams can beat the best in Europe. The England learning disability players who won the World Cup deserve to be on the stamp. Manchester United lifting the Champions League after winning 2-1 in the Nou Camp against Bayern Munich. The match and the performance showed the true fighting spirit at Old Trafford and we won thanks to two late goals. In a new comedy range of stamps, they could put the recent Scotland score lines on each stamp. Obviously the "respectable" Fairy Island result would be the main showpiece!
Marj Bonifacio, Philippines Gazza gets my nod for his performance in the Italia '90. Steve Redgrave... who could argue? I think Mathew Pinsent as well! Don Hutchison, he scored the last goal for Scotland at Wembley when we won the last 'Auld Enemy' clash. Or maybe Ronaldinho. In fact, David Seaman would be best. It's got to be Vladimir Smicer, he's a proven talent all across Europe. I would like to purchase a postage stamp of Segun Odegbami and Rashidi Yekini in my country. Both are undoubtedly two great players to have come out of Nigeria and I hope our soccer body and Government recognises that. As well as football we can't forget the other sporting stars. Daley Thompson put his sport on the map, he was committed, professional and brilliant.
David Rocastle and Iain Dowie, maybe not to of the most gifted talents but certainly the modern professional. If more players employed their kind of effort in this country and Scotland, the two national sides would be world beaters. > Personally, I would stick Robbie Fowler on a stamp. He is a great goalscorer, and all-round complete player. I rate him as a great, and think other greats should feature as well (Shearer, Le Tiss, Klinsmann). I agree with Dan, that 5-1 win should be celebrated again. Also, how about the Faroe Islands' 2-2 draw with the Scots. Oh, and 1966 because we never stop going on about it. It's got to be Michael Owen and David Beckham pictured together after that awesome night in Munich 12 months ago! Never to be forgotten here and in Germany! | Top Sports Talk stories now: Links to more Sports Talk stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
