| Wednesday, 14 August, 2002, 14:27 GMT 15:27 UK Will Cullen rescue Wolves? ![]() Super League strugglers Warrington turn to Wilderspool old boy Paul Cullen in a bid to avoid relegation. Will he keep them in the top flight? Cullen, who spent 16 years as player and assistant coach with Warrington, is the club's fourth coach in 12 months. He replaces David Plange, who was sacked two days ago, and has been handed a contract that runs until the end of the 2004 season. Warrington have won just five games this season, and Cullen faces a massive task to keep them in the top flight. Is he the right man for the job? This debate is now closed. A selection of your e-mails appear below. This is a great signing for the club. Paul is a winner, he has a great enthusiasm for rugby league and for Warrington especially, and he will not give in without a fight. Go for it Paul! I think Cullen is just the man to keep us up! He played with so much passion and commitment that if he can instill half of that into this squad then there's no way we will go down. This is a fantastic move by Warrington. My only concern is why did they not do it at the beginning of the season? I remember watching Paul a few seasons ago against a superb Bradford side and the motivation he installed in the side that day destroyed Bradford, who had gone to Wilderspool expecting to beat the Wire. If they can survive the drop, which I'm sure they will, he will turn this side into a top six finisher next year with continued improvement to come, as long as the board back him long term.
A good choice, and it's nice to see a Super League club picking up a coach from the Northern Ford Premiership. Remember what happened at St Helens when they gave a certain Ian Millward a chance? Hopefully Briers will now stay and the crowds will respond to a winning team. As a non-Wolves supporter (Saints fan), I believe the appointment of Paul Cullen is a wise move by the ailing Warrington club. Paul Cullen wore the primrose and blue with distinction and determination for 17 years. His return to the club will reinstall a pride in performance that has sadly been lacking in the Wolves ranks. More importantly, Cullen has proved himself at Whitehaven, taking a dilapidated club to the upper echelons of the NFP with raw resources. Paul has always seemed an articulate and eloquent thinker and has clearly proved this in a coaching capacity. Cullen is a brilliant manager who will introduce a bit of grit and spirit to the team. I am sure that we will soon see an improvement in the team's performances. Good Luck to Paul. I hope he can carry his passion for playing for Warrington into management, and I'm sure he will. This is a great appointment for the team as it's about time we started to see players and management who are committed to the club.
Let's stop the short-term appointments of players and go for players with heart - even if it means blooding youngsters. Go for it Paul, and let the lads know what is required of them. We are a big club with a proud history that needs to be maintained. Good Luck. I remember Paul as a tough-guy centre from my time on the Fletcher Street in the 80s and 90s. He never gave up or let his lack of pace affect his game, which was built on strong defence. He's not a quitter, and will give it everything, but Warrington's problems are wider than those on the pitch. Unless the board invest in the team, we'll have the best stadium in the NFP next year. Good luck Paul. It's a last throw of the dice by the Wire board. Paul Cullen doesn't have the time to affect greatly how his team will perform or over the next six weeks, but his obvious enthusiasm and love for the club will hopefully make a difference. If that's the case, this could be the best signing of the season! Good Luck Psycho! I hope the board will back him up with some new money to strengthen the squad. I am very pleased with the appointment of Paul. Hopefully his personality and attitude will rub off on the players at the club - starting on Sunday at Widnes. Let's just hope it's not too late to save us! I'm very pleased with the appointment of Paul Cullen. He is just what the club needs at this time to ensure we avoid the drop. He's a good motivator, has a good footballing brain and has an intimate knowledge of the club and the task at hand. I am sure he will instil the desire to win and never say die attitude that he always showed in his playing days in the current squad. He never took a backwards step as a player and I always enjoyed watching his "up and at 'em" approach. Underestimate him at your peril. Here's to a victory over Widnes at the weekend.
