| Saturday, 10 August, 2002, 11:56 GMT 12:56 UK Who will be the biggest star in 2002-3? The new European season is getting under way. Which African player is likely to be the best of the new season? The end of the World Cup signalled a flurry of transfer activity throughout Europe, much of in involving African players. Many moved to the English Premiership, especially some of those who starred during Senegal's great campaign, like El Hadji Diouf, Salif Diao and Aliou Cisse. But many of the established talents now have better opportunities to perform than ever before. Sammy Kuffour is now an established part of Bayern Munich's world class defence, while Ronaldo's forthcoming move away from Inter Milan could mean Sierra Leone's Mohammed Kallon gets the chance to become one of the best strikers in Italy. Or what about some of the lesser-known players, in France, Ukraine or Belgium? Who do you think will make the biggest impact? Apart from Kuffour at Munich (if Ferdinand is worth over 30million dollars then how much is this brother worth?), the two pretenders to Weah's throne: Nonda and Mantorras of Benfica. It should be an interesting contest. Also all those greedy, unambitious players switching to the Premiership will as usual live to regret it, as Yeboah, Weah, Bakayoko, Nyarko etc. have in the past. I know much is expected from El Hadji Diouf but do not think he will live up to this expectation. I believe Okocha will give the Premiership fans the African skill many have been expecting. Yobo has great skill also. I know Kanu, if given a chance this season, will prove himself, I can put my money on him while Julius Aghahowa will be the man to watch in the Ukrainian league. In El Hadji Diouf I see the next Abedi Pele. He is confident on the ball, and unstoppable, just like Abedi Pele was. He's the new King of African Football!
I think Diouf is the one to watch, but Zizi Robert of Liberia looks good. He may not win the Player of the Year title though because he plays in the Greek league which is less covered by the big press. JW Harris, USA Sillah will be the man, that young Gambia is doing a great job in Belgium. I think this year he will prove it. The past years people were looking at footballers from Nigeria, Camaroon, S Africa, Ghana etc. This season is a different one. Mohammed Kallon of Sierra Leone is Africa's best striker. If Ronaldo leaves Inter, Kallon will definitely win the African Player of the Year award. Kallon knows how to score against the best defenders of the world. Ahmed 'Mido' Hossam will be Africa's best player. At 19 years of age he helped Ajax to the league and cup titles scoring 9 goals in 10 games and 14 in 24, including a goal in the cup final. He was already demanded by Inter Milan but decided to stay for a while with Ajax. Another good player is Hatem Trabelsi who has performed excellently with Ajax in the previous season. The Tunisian and Egyptian often combined for more than one goal. For some reason, I believe Diouf will be a major flop. I think while we all rave about Sammy Kuffour, Diouf and the rest, let's not forget Otto Addo at Dortmund. The Ghanaian is electrtifying and has always come in good for the Germans when it matters most. There is also Michael Essien, another Ghanaian who was a regular for Bastia last season and who has already scored Bastia's first goal of the season against Lens.
I think Sammy Osei Kuffour of Bayern Munich will sweep aside the opposition and Caf will have no choice but to bury its head in shame and do the right thing for once. Come on Sammy, show them your stuff. Frank, UK Surely it is going to be the year of the 'Serial Killer'. Never in doubt, his skills and confidence - approaching being brash - will be too difficult to ignore. Watch out Heskey 'cause El Hadji Diouf just blasted you to the bench!
I would put my money on Lauren at Arsenal. This lad will more than want to make up for a disappointing World Cup. Already established as a regular at Arsenal lauren will prove why he has earned that trust. Tony, Cameroon/USA Sammy Kuffour of Ghana was the overall hottest favorite during last year's draw, but at end, it was given to an undeserving and little known striker. Well I'll tell you what, he is still the African Footballer of the Year despite every decision made by Caf. Next year will be Caf's last chance to prove that he deserves to be the Player of the Year after he has been unfairly refused by the African Football governing body two times in a row. With all doubt cleared about whether he merited the African Player of the Year award by his eletricfying performances at the World Cup, El Hadji Diouf will stand out again. Watch out for Nigeria's Julius Aghahowa and Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o Fils. Although they didn't show their talents in the Far East this summer because their countries didn't go far in the World Cup, undoubtedly they are among Africa's best. In fact, I expect either of them to be Africa's Player of the Year.
I think Julius Aghaowa will rise to the occasion as always, with his blistering speed, and his ability to put the ball in the net. He is sure to be in contention for African Player of the Year, he is definately going to be rocking the Ukrainian league this season. And we must also not forget our one and only master dribbler, Austin "Jay Jay" Okocha. Bolton certainly got their money's worth by buying him. Those English defences better watch out because once he's in that 18-yard box, only God can help them. Ikenna, USA The obvious choice will have to be Diouf, I believe he has the game to thrive in the Premiership. However my dark horse is Lomano Tresor Lua Lua. He is one of the most exciting players I have seen in a long time, another Abedi Pele. I hope Newcastle gives him a run this season, if not let them trade him because he is wasting away at their bench, the guy is world class.
Diouf will surely make it at Anfield for Liverpool. He has the talent to move around with the ball and high power and speed, and is always ready to destroy or bypass defensive lines. He is going to win African player of the year three times. Sheku M Jalloh, The Gambia Kanu may not have had good outing last season, but watch out for him this season, doing what he knows how to do best. Okocha is the man to watch out for. I think that Aghahowa will pull a fast one. The Teranga Lions trio will spring some surprises but their appearances will be limited, especially El Hadji Diouf's in the all red of Liverpool. My picks would be, Okocha, Diouf and Aghahowa. These guys have what it takes to set Europe on fire. I think Jay Jay Okocha has the necessary experience as well as technical ability to torment many of the Premiership defenders and I think he will make a mark on the English game. I think Diao will be the player to watch in the league especially with is superb skills. He will be the star for Africa.
Kallon will most likely be Africa Player of the Year, even though he has not played in the Nations Cup finals, because he is young, determined and talented. But he still has to measure up to the standard the likes of Ronaldo, and many more. Disclaimer: The BBC will put up as many of your comments as possible but we cannot guarantee that all e-mails will be published. The BBC reserves the right to edit comments that are published. Bob Ansu Tengb eh, Sierra Leone Eto'o has been a star in the past in one of the most competetive leagues in the world. I think he has grown, and has put the final touches to his already fine skill. I would not be surprised if a price tag of $30million hangs on him by the end of the season. Foe could also create a big impression. Ahmed Hossam (Mido) will be the new rising star of Africa, he's just 20 and he has already created himself a name in Europe with Ajax. Just give him two years time and he will be Africa's best. I think Okocha will be the player to watch in the league especially with is superb, tricky skills. He will be the star for Africa. With the brilliant performance of the Teranga Lions of Senegal in the far east, attention will be on their stars to shine in various leagues in Europe. All eyes will be on El Hadji Diouf at Anfield. But players like Okocha at Bolton and Yobo at Everton will be the shining lights of the new season. Liverpool will be unstoppable with Diouf and Diao. They will win the Premiership by Christmas. Unquestionably Mohammed Kallon has the talent to be Africa's biggest star - if Ronaldo goes and he gets a proper run in Inter's side. Jay Jay Okocha would be the man! Okocha has a way of rising to the occasion. He would mesmerize fans of his new club, put opposing defence in confusion and above all increase Bolton's profit this season as many a lover of football will throng to the Reebok Stadium to watch this magician cast his spell! |
