Will Montoya close the gap?
Juan Pablo Montoya takes pole position
Juan Pablo Montoya takes pole position in a tight battle with Ralf and Michael Schumacher at Germany's Nurburgring.

Will the Montoya close the gap on Schumacher this Sunday?

HAVE YOUR SAY

Montoya won his third consecutive pole position after a tight finish with the Schumacher brothers at the European Grand Prix.

Montoya set a time of one minute 29.906 seconds in his Williams-BMW to edge out team-mate Ralf Schumacher, with Michael Schumacher third.

However it remains to be seen whether Montoya's Michelin tyres will maintain their advantage over Ferrari's Bridgestones, which have been generally stronger in race trim this season.

Who will come out on top at the Nurburgring?

HAVE YOUR SAY

Why is everyone talking of Coulthard? Surely the only real threat to the Schumacher dominance in the near future comes from his brother or Montoya!
Ian, UK

The fight for the second place gets real exciting from this race on
R Simha, USA

Catch Ferrari and Schuey.... my god what have you been eating? Ferrari's exhaust gasses must be blocking your head. Montoya, Ralf, DC, & Rube's may take the odd race but the season already belongs to the ultimate driver.
Jim Edstein, Taiwan

Montoya might win this race if he adopts a conservative pit-strategy and does not push the BMW engine to its limit. Reducing the 43-point gap by a mere four or six points does not make the championship any more interesting. However the fight for the second place gets real exciting from this race on.
R Simha, USA

Schumy is in a class of his own. It does no matter what car he drives -he will run over anyone in his way.
Rupal Patel, USA

Now that Juan Pablo Montoya has got more poles than anyone this season despite having an inferior car, perhaps people will give him credit and start considering him in the same light as Michael Schumacher.
Alan, Norwich, UK

If the BMW engine does not fail this time, I think that Juan Pablo will win.
Miguel Grimaldo, Panama

It is only Michael Schumacher who is able to challenge for top honours in a inferior machine
Ronnie Mirza, India

Montoya is the best driver in Formula One today. In equal equipment Schumi would always be second. If you swapped their current positions JP would be leading by 40 points. Ralf and Rubens are irrelevant
Bernd, Germany

Although Montoya has bagged his third consecutive pole in a row, the Bridgestone tyres are far superior in race conditions than the variable Michelins and unfortunately, no matter how hard Montoya drives - and pushes his BMW engine to its limits -this is what will concrete yet another Ferrari win.
Richard, Melbourne, Australia

I don't think that practice times give much useful insight into how the cars will fare during the race. I generally ignore all but the last ten minutes of qualifying, which tends to be when the gloves come off and the competitive truth emerges.

As for DC threatening Schumacher at the Nurburgring - if the Ferrari goes the distance then I can't see it happening and I bet DC can't either. But that won't stop the Flying Scotsman from trying his best, so good luck to him!
Chris B, England

As we witnessed a few years ago it is only Michael Schumacher who is able to challenge for top honours in a inferior machine. Today's drivers depend too much on machinery rather than their own driving skill. We have the best driver driving the best car at the moment so one would have to be kidding to tip DC, Montoya or Ralf to win the race this weekend.
Ronnie Mirza, India

The only driver capable of challenging Schumacher is his team-mate Ruben Barrichello
Travis, Montreal, Canada
Coulthard has got no chance. Schumacher will annhilate the opposition as he has done throughout the season. Seven out of nine for Schumi!
Phil, Harlow, UK

Practice makes perfect for David Coulthard, it is good to see the flying Scot challenging Schumacher on his own patch but I fear the championship may be out of reach.
Alistair, Cleethorpes, UK

The only driver capable of challenging Schumacher is his team-mate Rubens Barrichello, such is Ferrari's superiority. Until the other constructors match Ferrari's high standards we won't see any real racing.
Travis, Montreal, Canada
