![]() | Congratulate Wigan Warriors ![]() Wigan outclass St Helens to take the 2002 Challenge Cup final 21-12. Are Wigan worthy winners?
Radlinski had spent last week in hospital with an infected foot and only declared himself fit to play an hour before kick-off. In their first Challenge Cup final since 1998, the Warriors took the lead from the 10th minute and continued to pile on the pressure. Despite a spirited fight St Helens failed to convert three kicks, and never threatened the lead. E-mail your Challenge Cup comments. This debate is now closed. Read a selection of your e-mails below. What a great day out in Edinburgh. The game was tremendous, as was meeting all the fans from all the different rugby league clubs - not just Wigan and St Helens. The whole of Saturday was like a festival of rugby league, and in a great town too. Wow, what a match! My 1st Challenge Cup final and the boys did us proud! Edinburgh was fantastic, and the atmosphere around the city was just buzzing. Thank goodness Rugby fans are so passionate with their banter rather than battering - like in some other sports! Wigan were awesome, and I even went home and watched it again on Sky! I still can't wipe the smile of my face. Radlinski's performance was nothing new - it was just the typical world-class performance we've come to expect from one of the world's best rugby league players. He is special, a true warrior. Rugby Union must be gutted he stuck two fingers up at them.
Also, well done to both teams for making the final a fantastic advertisement for rugby league. Six tries in a major final, and there were very few penalties resulting in a fast flowing game. Does that happen in rugby union? It's nice to see so many people eating their words. On Saturday the balance was redressed: Wigan now have the respect they deserve, and St Helens have paid the price for showing our great game grave disrespect at Bradford last week. Wigan were honest throughout, had the belief to overcome the odds and showed it on the pitch with a fantastic display. My only hope is that Radlinski continues to give us amazing displays to earn the Man of Steel - an award which he has deserved on more than one occasion. Well done Wigan, you did us proud! Well done the Pie-Eaters! It's always good to beat Saints, especially when they try to rest players. I didn't hear Wigan complaining when they had a League game one week before the final and another game four days after. Never in doubt lads!
As one of the Wigan fans who went to the final actually thinking we could win, I would like to congratulate our boys on a brilliant display. The Cup is back home were it belongs, and all the glory hunter saints fans who thought they were would destroy us are now champions of nothing. Congratulations to Wigan on an excellent performance by all the team. How wonderful it was to travel home and see the look on the Saints fans' faces! The homecoming showed the Saints how to celebrate in style. Congratulations to Wigan on winning the Cup at Murrayfield. They were the best team on the day and St Helens were "not at the races" - perhaps because they had not played for a fortnight! Ian Millward and St Helens got exactly what they deserved for their approach to the match with Bradford Bulls the week before - absolutely nothing!
Well done Wigan! I honestly thought Saints would win, but you proved me and the other doubters out there wrong. I went to Wigan today to watch them bringing the cup home and it was fantastic. It showed me how much the fans mean to the players and vice-versa! A fantastic game played in a great city with a great atmosphere. The athleticism of the players was breath-taking. Wigan deserved to win. Well done. As a Bulls fan I would just like to say "Well done Wigan !" My family were cheering for you on Saturday as we absolutely despise St Helens. Once again well done lads, it was nice to see their fans suffer! Fantastic game and well done Wigan. As police match commander at Murrayfield, I would just like to say a big thank you to all the rugby league fans that made the match a memorable one, for all the right reasons, for me and my officers. Well done - and 'haste ye back.'
The speed of the game was unbelievable, Union has nothing on this. What awesome athletes, (both sides) Paul Johnson one minute on the wing, next min at second row! Sorry I was a doubter Wigan, but you were fantastic. It's great to hear a live game, even out here in the States. Well played Wigan. They took their chances and Andy's kicking did the rest. Saints shouldn't have cheated by saving their players last week. Wigan pie-eaters remember the 1991 final! Well played both teams. Thank you for a tremendous final. I am one happy Beech Hillbilly. I'll be there following the bus with the whole team on going towards the town hall. Wigan looked like they wanted to win the cup more than St Helens and therefore deserve the victory. There were tough calls for the video referee but that is no surprise with two great teams playing in such a closely contended cup final. The result could have been different if that decision (Cunningham try) had gone Saints way, but it didn't. Wigan 'made their own luck' on the day and fully deserve the victory. Saints will bounce back from this very quickly!
Wigan were the better team and were worthy winners. Although I have no idea how Cummings thought that Wellens had stolen the ball to give Wigan the penalty that ultimately won them the game. Radlinski's Lance Todd trophy award was well deserved. He came up with about four try saving tackles. It's great to see so many people from around the world listening in to the match, it's a pity you guys didn't see it, I was expecting St Helens to win, it certainly surprised a few people! Well done Wigan! Wigan are back - congratulations Wigan on a great and truly well deserved victory. A big thank you to Kris Radlinski for what seems to be another awesome display straight from the sickbed. Thanks for the commentary Beeb - the only true way of keeping informed in expatriate life. BR> Dave Allen, Bangkok, Thailand Well done for Wigan, it's been too long for this side. To further sweeten the pot, they managed to win despite St Helen's apparent cheating when they rested almost their entire cup final squad last week. Wigan you stuffed Saints and at the end of the match you would have wanted to see the look on Ian Millward's face!
Outstanding performance yesterday Wigan, well done! How very satisfying to see Ian Millward's dubious tactics of resting his players last week backfire on St Helens - justice has been done. Congratulations Wigan, you deserve it. A great game and result not only from a Wigan fans point of view but also for the game. I think any first time watchers will now be hooked to the sport and be able to see what a great game rugby league is. Well done Wigan, a thoroughly deserved win and let's hope we can make it a double come October. It was a magnificent performance today; if you played like that every match you could beat anyone!
Well done Wigan! Ian, he wasn't sin binned he was blood binned. There were a couple of 'interesting' decisions, but overall it all balanced out. Serves Saints right for putting out the weak side against Bradford. It puts Bank Holiday Monday behind us! Well done Wigan, it's about time we got back to the good old days, against the old rival. Thanks BBC for the commentary, a Warrior living in the USA! Thanks for the wonderful live commentary Beeb, Korea sucks for real sport but we had a great party listening to the game. Excellent game, and well played Wigan - shame about some of Cummings' decision though - Britt sin binned because the Wigan player dropped the ball, and Ainscough allowed to hold down when Saints might have scored. |
