![]() | Monday, 17 December, 2001, 10:20 GMT Is Ronnie snooker's greatest ever? ![]() Ronnie O'Sullivan crushes Ken Doherty 10-1 to become only the fifth man to win the the World and UK Championships in the same year. Where does 'The Rocket' stand among snooker's greats? World champion O'Sullivan played some sensational snooker to humiliate Ireland's Ken Doherty in the UK Championship final. The 'Essex Exocet' never looked back after racking up a magical 106 break in frame four, and Doherty admitted he was lucky to win a frame. In bagging the 100,000 top prize, O'Sullivan took his career earnings past the 3m mark. All of which has prompted the question: where does Ronnie rank among snooker's greats? A genius...for me he is one of three most naturally talented players, along with Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins and Jimmy White. Greatest ever...at the moment he has a long way to go- but there is no disputing that with his talent he could do it. If he continues to stay in the right frame of mind he is unbeatable. But as we all know Ronnie has his ups and down- lets just hope he remains going in the right direction, in which case there will be no stopping him! Most of the comments here are repeats of what the BBC commentary team have been saying all week. Everyone knows that titles are what it comes down to, but his performance yesterday was just incredible. Also to beat the No.1 in the world in a match like that and come through to destroy one of the most solid players in the world...greatness written all over him.
I have been watching snooker since the Eighties and Ronnie is definitely the best player I've ever seen. His break building has always surpassed other great snooker players but he now seems to have a much better all-round game - with good safety play, spectacular long shots and improving tactical awareness. For me, 'The Rocket' is definitely the greatest and I'm sure he'll go on to prove this over the next few years. Stephen Hendry, when he was at his very best, would have beaten O'Sullivan hands down. Ronnie is incredibly gifted and exciting to watch, but the best? Not by a long way. He has yet to prove that he is the greatest ever but the potential is definitely there. When you are talking about a man who can score century breaks with his left hand, then he has to be classed as one of the most naturally gifted players of all time. Whether he will take it on and become the greatest ever remains to be seen. As a Ronnie supporter I hope he does. There is no doubt that Ronnie is one of the most talented players to ever play the game, but until he has won the same number of titles as Davis and Hendry I don't think he can claim to be the best ever.
Ronnie's not got the cue action to rival Stephen Lee, or the individual ball potting skills of Mark Williams, and Peter Ebdon's safety game is superior to his. Ronnie is however, the most naturally gifted and exciting player to come on the scene since Jimmy White, and when he's on form there's no one that can touch him. It's so good to see Ronnie now realising the massive potential rather than letting the demons in his head get the better of him. If he keeps it up we could see him dominate the game this decade just as Steve Davis did in the 80's and Hendry did in the 90's. Greatest ever player? Possibly, but never forget how good Alex Higgins was in his day. He'll need a few more World Championships under his belt before he can start being called one of the best ever, but nobody can doubt that he has the natural talent to become the best. Ronnie is a wonderful player and a great champion - he is probably the most naturally gifted player ever (notwithstanding Alex Higgins and Jimmy White). There is no doubt that Ronnie is so good that his "best" is better than anyone else's and if he stays focused, he cannot be beaten by anybody. However, to argue that he is the greatest ever is premature right now. The best and most accurate measure for greatness is titles and trophies, and at the moment Stephen Hendry can rightly claim to be the greatest ever. I am not saying that Ronnie won't eclipse what Hendry has achieved, but at the moment with one World Title to Hendry's seven, there is a long way to go to take Hendry's mantle. On his day Ronnie can beat anybody and there is no argument that on natural talent alone he is one of the best players ever. But, he cannot be regarded as the greatest ever as you can only base that on a players record. On this basis he is miles behind Hendry and Davis and is unlikely to ever match their records. |
