England on road to recovery?
Are England on the road to recovery?
England's cricketers complete a 5-0 whitewash of Zimbabwe with victory in the final match in Bulawayo.

Will this winning streak provide a springboard for future success?

HAVE YOUR SAY

England have rounded off a successful One Day Series in style with a trouncing of Zimbabwe.

After ending their eleven match losing streak, England can now boast five successive victories, and never really looked troubled throughout the tour.

Nasser Hussain will also have been boosted by the performances of several new additions, most notably James Kirtley, Matthew Hoggard, Ryan Sidebottom and Jeremy Snape.

England will undoubtedly face tougher opposition in future matches, but will this victory mark the start of a new era for English cricket?

Are England on the road to recovery? And which of the new players on display in Zimbabwe can lead the team to future international success?

Beating Zimbabwe does not prove anything. England will be facing much sterner Tests in the coming few months and I find it very difficult to believe how they can win with this mediocre team. My first suggestion is get back Graeme Hick and let the batting revolve around him. Secondly chose a successor for Stewart who has proved himself considerably at the county level and my suggestion would be to get Chris Reid. Lastly its high time England get rid of the so called "all- rounders" like Flintoff and Colingwood and get decent players.
Marc Anthony, Perth, Australia

Recovery? Just because England were hammered by the best cricketing side ever to grace this earth, doesn't mean they have collapsed. England are still a strong side, and will continue to be, as long as Nasser is in charge. True, he does need to prove himself against the Indians and the South Africans, but we beat South Africa under Alec Stewart, and Hussain has an infinitely stronger team than Stewart did - why can't England be up there among the best. Remember, this time two years ago, we were the worst test team in the world.
Nathan Hamer, England

Would Derby County be considered a good if they beat a conference team in the FA Cup? Of course not, England are still the bottom feeders of the cricket world.
Fred Gwilliam, Australia

Very good series win for England. Hoggard and Collingwood must be part of every one day squad for the World Cup preparation, as should Flintoff.Let's hope the tour to India goes ahead - that should provide a real test to see where the road leads.
Sanjay Khanna, India

Hoggard, Kirtley and Foster all performed well

Well played England, but this really is a weak Zimbabwe side. They have only one world class bowler and for much of the series he was injured. A word about Nick Knight; he is a tremendous player. As I remember it, he gets runs wherever he bats in the order, be it in Tests or ODI's. I find it incomprehensible that England regularly pick sides that do not include him.
Marc, France

I think they have to prove against countries like Australia and SouthAfrica how good they are. The real test will no doubt be against India this season.
Monica, England

I think England have been playing very well and they should play as many one days with this squad as possible if they want to do well in the World Cup. In India they have do to well to prove how good they really are because Zimbabwe haven't really set any competitive scores.
Adeal Shafique, England

Our 5-0 win over Zimbabwe has not only raised our spirits but also given us some young hopes for the future. Players like Hoggard, Kirtley and Foster all performed well. We also saw strengths in senior players. Knight - man of the series with 80 not out on Saturday, and Hussain with strong, important partnerships and showed good captaincy with his bowlers. Yet we cannot get ahead of ourselves. These wins were important to get, but we now face India - a great test, for all players and we still need to make improvements for our side before that series. We are on that road to recovery, but haven't anywhere near reached the end yet.
Katherine Lock, Essex
