But is Dettori in the same league as the brilliant jockey? Sakhee's victory over Aquarelliste, Dettori's second in the French highlight, gave the Italian his 100th victory in Group One races. Dettori's greatest day came at Ascot in 1996, when he rode an unprecedented "Magnificent Seven" winners out of seven. Yet the gregarious Dettori has yet to land the Derby, a race Piggott won nine times. The 11-time champion jockey won 30 English Classics in all. Piggott retired at the age of 56, meaning Dettori is unlikely to get near most of the Englishman's records, but the Italian does has the advantage of box-office appeal. Who's the greatest? Tell us what you think. There is no basis for comparison. Piggott has left a record that even Frankie would find it very difficult to match. There is no Flat race that puts jockeys, trainers, owners, punters under pressure like the Derby. Winning it nine times is legendary. Piggott has won races on horses with no special pedigree. Frankie is a fantastic jockey but has always had the benefit of brilliant mounts. I have yet to see a jockey like Piggott. As Frankie and Lester are so different, with both riding styles and personality, it is difficult to make comparisons. Lester's Derby and Classic record is outstanding compared to Frankie's, yet with the globalisiation of racing these days, a top-class international rider like Frankie would have commitments elsewhere in the world. My favourite racing memory is Frankie's Magnificent Seven.
In my mind, nothing will ever compare with the sheer enthusiasm and life Frankie has brought into racing. After all, he's brought the great sport out of obscurity with his amazing talent and character. If determination to win is any criteria, Lester had it over Frankie. I can't imagine the latter grabbing a whip from another rider, as Piggott did after losing his own during a race at Deauville, or physically pushing the head of another horse off his mount, as Piggott did at Sha Tin. Class acts are also judged by the way they perform at the highest level and with just seven Classic winners to Piggott's 30 and no Derbies to Lester's nine, Dettori has a way to go yet to match the legend. Mind you, if his mum was any judge, Piggott was never the best anyway. After making his debut, Iris Piggott famously remarked: "He is quite a good rider, but will never be as good as his father. Don't make a fuss, Lester is just a very ordinary boy." It is impossible to make a comparison until Frankie has retired. Then you can compare the statistics and see whether Frankie comes anywhere near to the genius in Lester Piggott, and also if he can match the amount of Classic winners. It really doesn't matter who's better. It's just a pleasure and a privilege to have been able to watch these two racing geniuses in action. Lester winning the Breeders' Cup on Royal Academy is one of my all-time favourite sporting memories. And who can use enough superlatives to describe Frankie's recent riding achievements. | Piggott v Dettori
